Synod, fhall, agreeably to the government and dif cipline of the Church, for the future, be alfo exercifed by the respective claffes.

ART. XL.

It shall be left to the discretion of every Student in Theology, to apply either to the Synod or to any claffis he may choose for examination. But a candidate who has received a call, muft be examined by the claffis under whofe jurisdiction the Church that has made the call is placed; unless fuch candidate fhould prefer being examined by the Synod.

ART. XLI.

At every examination of a Student or candidateby a claffis, two of the Deputati Synodi fhall be prefent, who fhall fee that the examination is performed with ftrictness, propriety and juftice. That the Deputati may obtain proper and timely notice, it shall be the duty of the President of the last preceding claffis, upon application being made to him for an examination, to fend immediate information to the Deputati, and communicate the time and place when and where the fame is to be held, in fuch manner that the Deputati shall be notified at least two weeks before fuch examination.

ART. XLII

Every claffis fhall keep a book, in which the forms of fubfcriptions for candidates and Minifters of the Gospel are fairly written, which thofe who are exa-mined and approved, fhall refpectively fubfcribe in the prefence of the claffis. It fhall alfo be the duty of every claffis, annually to report to the Synod, all perfons who have been examined and licenfed, as well as thofe who have been ordained; and alfo, all removals of Minifters from one place to another, or by death, which may have happened within the jurifdiction of such claffis, fince the last feffion of: Synod.

ART. XLIN

Whenever the examination of a candidate for the Ministry, the approbation of a call, or any other ordinary bufinefs which could not be tranfacted at the stated meeting, fhall render an extraordinary meeting of the claffis neceffary, it fhall be the duty of the Prefident of the laft claffis, upon application.being made to him for that purpose, to call by circular letters » the members together. And, whenever two Ministers and two elders belonging to the claffis shall up. on any occafion, request in writing, under their r hands, an extraordinary meeting, the prefident of the:

Jaft claffis may not refufe calling the fame; provided that the expenfes attending all extraordinary meetings of the claffis fhall be always fupported by the perfon or congregation, at whofe request or for whofe benefit fuch feffion is held.

ART. XLIV.

Once every year the claffis fhall direct, what shall be deemed neceffary and practicable with regard to the vifitation of the Churches, within their refpective jurifdictions, and report the fame to the Synod. For the more uniform and proper execution of this important duty, fuch particular questions and inquiries. as fhall be agreed upon, in any general Synod for that purpose, fhall be inferted in the book of records. of every claffis, and by the vifitors be faithfully propofed to the Minifter, elders, and the deacons of every congregation in their refpective vifitations.

III.

PARTICULAR SYNODS..

ART. XLV.

PARTICULAR SYNOD confifts of a delegation of two Ministers, and two elders fram

a number of claffes, (Church orders Art. 47.) and conftitutes a representation of all the particular Churches within those respective claffes.

ART. XLVI.

Synods have power to receive and determine allappeals and references properly brought from the claffes; and to take original cognizance of fuch cafes as are not merely local, and which in their consequences are fuppofed to affect the general welfare of the Church.

ART. XLVII.

Notwithstanding the power of examination is conferred upon the claffes, the particular Synods, (untill it be otherwife determined in the general Synod,) will continue as heretofore, to examine and license; and it shall still remain in the choice of any Student in Theology, or of any candidate who has received a call to be examined by the Synod: but with this exprefs.declaration, that the examinations held by any claffis, and the certificate given by the prefident of a claffis, fhall be confidered as equally proper, au• thentic and valid, as thofe done and conferred by a Synod.

ART. XLVIII.

A copy of the minutes of every feffion of the claffis, held fince the laft feffion of Synod, fhall, at the opening of the Synod, be produced and laid upon the table for the infpection of the members. The reports of each claffis refpecting the candidates, Ministers, ordinations, and removals made within their jurifdictions, shall not only be mentioned in the minutes of the Synod, but be regularly inserted by the scriba of the Synod, in a register preserved for that purpose by the Synod.

ART. XLIX.

When any particular business cannot be finished at the annual feffion of Synod, or when any matter is foreseen to claim their attention, which ought to be dispatched before the next ufual time of meeting, it fhall be in the power of Synod to adjourn to any future day, and hold an extraordinary feffion. Whenever alfo two of the Deputati Synodi, fhall reprefent to the prefident of the last Synod, the neceffity of calling an extraordinary Synod, and shall in writing request him fo to do, it fhall be the duty of fuch prefident by circular letters to the members of the laft Synod, to fummon an extra feffion, for the exprefs purpofe fug
