what was made known in secret was to be published on the house top, and their light was to shine before men; to sow the seed of the kingdom and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.1

After Christ, the apostles were to preach to the nations; they did not only preach, but they chose from among believers faithful men to become officebearers in the church. At the present time the Bible is over the world. I have heard the ministers of Christ preach, I have seen the members of his church, and I receive the scripture, and feel a desire to tell all sinners what is necessary for them to know. I be lieve it is necessary for those who know the word of God to tell those who know it not. I think it is my duty to preach the everlasting gospel to my fellowmen, because I find it is not contrary to the spirit of the gospel, and because if am found faithful, I have a right to preach the gospel. The apostles received a command to preach the gospel, not as an extraor dinary office, but because they were members of Christ-every believer is a member of Christ, and it is his duty to preach the gospel according to his gifts. Success has followed the preaching of faithful men in every age since the apostles died, and they have also suffered for the same cause as the apostles did, even to the present day. These faithful men knew, that if they were ashamed of Christ before men, of them Christ would be ashamed before his Father. Have I not heard the same word? Is it not my duty to con

fess&Christ before men, and preach the gospel, and make known my Saviour, as I am a believer in him? But although I think it my duty to preach the gospel; I also consider it my duty to pray for those gifts which the Lord in mercy bestows on those whom he chooses to preach his gospel in the church.

Question 3rd. What are your views of the doctrines contained in the word?

Ans.-The doctrines which I believe are according to what the Scriptures say-God to us in mercy hath given all the doctrines in his holy word. "We have also à more sure word of prophesy, whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of inan, but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost," 2 Peter i. 19-21. "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction din righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works," 2 Tim. iii. 16, 17. It is written by the inspiration of God, I be lieve in that word of truth and life.

Besides, I believe, as the most important doctrine, in one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; "for there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,"

1 Tim. ii. 5. That which we cannot see with our eyes, (such as angels,) and that which we can see, yea, every thing was created by the great God. In union with God the Father and God the Son is the Holy Ghost so called; three persons, and three names, according as the Scriptures say, 1 John v. 7, "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one." These three are one God: the Father is the Creator, the Son is our Saviour, and the Holy Ghost is our Sanctifier. By these three offices three persons are engaged. In this one almighty, one infinite in wisdom, one from eternity and without end, one holy, one just, true, one omnipresent, one omniscient, one who is love and mercy, this trinity and unity, three in one. Besides, I believe between God and men, Jesus Christ the Mediator is the only Son of God, and our Redeemer, who from eternity on our account made a covenant with God, and God made a covenant with Him for us.

God the Father declared to our fathers by the prophets, that he had one Son, whom he would send to our world to gather his people from the scattered. "All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned every one unto his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." Isa. liii. 6. "But he answered and said, I am not sent, but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel." Matt. xv. 24. When the prophecies were fulfilled concerning the time of his appearance, then he came into the world. When he appeared in the world, he taught the people what

engagement existed between the Father and him from everlasting to everlasting-" That he had honour from God the Father from everlasting," John xvii. 5. “That the world was created for him and by him," Col. i. 16. "That God did choose his people in Christ," 2 Tim. i. 9. Tit. i. 1-3.

What was done before Christ appeared in our world, I believe: Adam transgressed-sin entered into the world-the ground was cursed-preachers of righteousness were raised up-the wicked were destroyed by a flood, and the righteous were saved. I believe Abraham was called, and God made a covenant with him. Gal. iii. 16. “Now to Abraham and his seed were the promise made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ." The promised seed was afterwards promised to spring from the house of David. In the fulness of time Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, and made under the law. "But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law." Gal. iv. 4. He was subject to his mother and supposed father for thirty years, Luke ii. 51. He told the people why he came into the world, "But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice; for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance," Matt. ix. 13-What he was going to do in this world, "From that time forth began Jesus to show unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders, and chief priests, and scribes, and be killed,

and be raised again the third day," Matt. xvi. 21. "And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men; and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again: and they were exceeding sorry, chap. xvii. 22, 23; also the whole of the 10th chapter of John-What the church must do, Matt. chapters v. vi. vii.; Matt. xi. 28-30, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls; for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” John vi. 27, 39, 40, 51; John xv. 1-17. Jesus Christ told the people what he would do for his church, and what he would give to them at the last day, "Verily, verily I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life," John v. 24. "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth on me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth, and believeth in me, shall never die. Believest thou this?" John xi. 25, 26; Matt. xxv. 3141. What he will do to the wicked at the last day; Matt. xxv. from 41 to the end. All this I believe.

I believe in election, and that faith in Jesus Christ, regeneration, justification, adoption, and sanctification, are essential to salvation.
