Q. 21. Who is the Redeemer of God's elect?

A. The only Redeemer of God's elect is the Lord Jesus Christ, who, being the eternal Son of God, became man", and so was, and continueth to be, God and man in two distinct natures, and one person, for evero.

Q. 22. How did Christ, being the Son of God, become man? A. Christ, the Son of God, became man, by taking to himself a true body P, and a reasonable soul, being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and born of her, yet without sin 3.

21. m 1 Tim. ii. 5. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Ver. 6. Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

s Heb. iv. 15. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Heb. vii. 26. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens.

Q. 23. What offices doth Christ execute as our Redeemer? A. Christ, as our Redeemer, executeth the offices of a prophet, of a priest, and of a king, both in his estate of humiliation and exaltation *.

Q. 24 How doth Christ execute the office of a prophet?

A. Christ executeth the office of a prophet, in revealing to us, by his word and Spirit, the will of God for our salvation".

23. t Acts iii. 21. Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. Ver. 22. For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A Prophet shall the Lord your God raise up. unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. Heb. xii. 25. See that ye refuse not him that speaketh: for if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven. Compared with 2 Cor. xii, 3. Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, which to you-ward is not weak, but is mighty in you. Heb. v. 5. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to-day have I begotten thee. Ver. 6. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchisedec: Ver. 7. Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications, with strong cry. ing and tears, unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared. Heb. vii. 25. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Psal. ii. 6. Yet have I set my King upon my holy hill of Zion, Isa. ix. 6. For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon his

shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Ver. 7. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth, even for ever: the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this, Matt. xxi. 5. Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. Psal. ii. 8. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Ver. 9. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron, thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Ver. 10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Ver. 11. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

He is despised and rejected cf men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid as it were our faces from him: he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Ver. 31. He, seeing this before, spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

A. We are made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ, by the effectual application of it to us by his Holy Spirit 9.

Q. 30. How doth the Spirit apply to us the redemption purchased by Christ?

A. The Spirit applieth to us the redemption purchased by Christ, by working faith in us, and thereby uniting us to Christ in our effectual calling".

Q. 31. What is effectual calling?

A. Effectual calling is the work of God's Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery ", enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills *,

Which is the earnest of our inheritance, until the redemption of the purchased possession,unto the praise of his glory. John vi. 37. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. Ver. 39. And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. Eph ii. 8. For by grace are ye saved, through faith; and hat not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.

Eph. iii. 17. That Christ may

dwell in your hearts by faith that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, &c. I Cor. i. 9. God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. 2 Thess. ii. 13. But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth: Ver. 14. Whereunto he called you by our Gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
