XXXII

It comprehends the whole states' policy; in the first part treats of the rights of war; in the second, of the subject of this work; and in the third, of the law of nations in general, of liberty, of slavery, and of the condition of men in Society.

The second is entitled,

The Ship Master's Assistant and Owners' Manuel; containing
complete information, as well to Merchants, Masters of
Ships, and persons employed in the merchant service, as to
Officers and others in the Royal Navy, relative to the Mer-
cantile and Maritime Laws and Customs. By a Gentleman
of the Inner-Temple. London, 1795.

It contains almost all that the English Laws prescribed upon the subject of our
work, and is the work of a practising Lawyer.

The third is the work of the learned Abbott :

A treatise of the Law relative to Merchant Ships and Seamen. By CHARLES ABBOTT, of the Inner-Temple, Barrister at Law. London, 1814. The 4th Edit. is of 1812.

It will be perceived, that we have had frequent reference to this work, and it comprises every thing on the subject of maritime contracts, with exception of insurance contracts, which is worth notice from the English laws and judicial practice, and from the French authors. The author was unacquainted with any language in which he could have read the Consulate and the Northern Sea Laws. Yet the work deserves a place in the library of every gentleman, having any concern in English maritime affairs.

EDWARD LAWES, a practical treatise on Charter-parties of Affreightment, Bills of Lading, and stoppage in transitu, with an Appendix of Precedents. London, 1813.

This treatise contains a more circumstantial exposition of the nature of Charterparties and Bills of Lading, than is to be found in any other language. The author has indeed, referred to no other laws, but those of Oleron and Wisbuy; but as his work was written towards the conclusion of a war, which brought the commerce of almost the whole world to the port of London; he has been enabled to avail himself of a multiplicity of judicial decisions, that comprehend almost every peculiarity of the subject before us; and render his labours, though referring only to English forms and English jurisprudence, a subject of general recommendation.
