PSALM XXXI.

1 WITH Thee, O JEHOVAH, do I take refuge,
Let me never be put to shame;
Through Thy mercy rescue me,

2 Incline Thine ear unto me quickly,

Deliver me, be unto me a rock of might-
A fortress to save me.

3 Truly my rock and my fortress art Thou,

4

Guide me then according to Thy name, and gently lead me. Extricate me from the net which is secretly spread for me, For Thou art my strength;

5 Into Thy hands do I commit my life.

THOU hast liberated me, O JEHOVAH, God of faithfulness! 6 THOU hatest those who pay regard unto lying vanities; But as for me, in JEHOVAH have I put my trust. 7 I exult and rejoice in Thy loving-kindness,

Because Thou hast looked upon mine affliction.

THOU hast been mindful of my distresses,

8 And hast not delivered me into the hands of the enemy; THOU hast caused my feet to stand in a broad place.

9 Be gracious unto me, O JEHOVAH, for I am in distress, Mine eye, my spirits, and my body waste away through vexation. 10 Truly my life is brought to an end with sorrow, And my years with moaning.

My strength sinketh under my misery,

And my bones waste away.

Unto all mine enemies I am become a reproach,

To my neighbours a burden, a terror to mine acquaintance; Those who see me in the streets flee from me.

PSALM XXXI.

This Psalm contains alternately prayers under distress and thanksgivings for deliverances.

2 fortress
5 life

Heb. house of fortifications. Heb. breath.

6 lying vanities - i. e. idols.

9 delivered me - Heb. shut me up.

12 I am forgotten like a dead man who is out of remembrance;

I am become like a broken vessel.

13 Truly I have heard the slanders of many;

Fear is on every side,

While they sit consulting together against me

While they are devising how to take away my life.

14 As for me, upon Thee, JEHOVAH, do I place my confidence;

I say: Thou art my God.

15 My time is in Thy hand,

Deliver me from the hand of mine enemies,

Even from my persecutors.

16 Shew the light of Thy countenance unto Thy servant; Save me through Thy loving-kindness.

17 O JEHOVAH, let me not be put to shame,

For I have called unto Thee;

Let the wicked be put to shame,

Let them be silenced in the grave.

18 Let the lying lips be closed,

Which rail against the righteous man, with pride and scorn.

19 How great is Thy goodness,

Which Thou hast laid up for those who reverence Thee— Which Thou conferrest on those who take refuge with Thee, Before the sons of men!

20 THOU Concealest them in Thy secret recesses,

From the conspiracies of men;

THOU treasurest them in Thy pavilion,
Out of the reach of the strife of tongues.

12 remembrance Heb. heart or mind.

become like—i. e. utterly neglected as being worthless.

15 my time &c.-i. e. The term of my life depends upon Thy will.

before the sons of men — - i. e. openly, so

that the world must acknowledge "there

is a reward for the righteous man."
Compare Ps. Lviii. 11.

18 rail - Heb. speak with harshness.
20 Thy secret recesses - Heb. the secret
place of Thy presence. See Ps. xxvii. 5.

21 Blessed be JEHOVAH!

For He hath shewn wonderfully His loving-kindness to me,

As though I had been in a fenced city.

22 But as for me, while fleeing in terror, I said:

I am removed far out of Thy view.

23 Yet truly, Thou didst hear my supplicating voice, When I cried aloud unto Thee.

24 Love JEHOVAH, all ye His pious worshippers; JEHOVAH preserveth the faithful,

And abundantly repayeth him who dealeth proudly.

25 Be strong and let your hearts be firm, All ye who in confidence await JEHOVAH.

PSALM XXXII.

1 HAPPY is he whose transgression is forgiven

Whose sin is covered!

2

Happy is the man,

Unto whom JEHOVAH doth not impute iniquity,
And in whose mind there is no deceit !

3 When I was silent, my bones wasted away

Through my loud moaning all the day long.

4 For, day and night, Thy hand was heavy upon me, My moisture was turned into the dryness of summer.

[blocks in formation]

5 I acknowledged unto Thee my sin,

And I did not conceal mine iniquity.

I said: I will confess my transgressions unto JEHOVAH ! And Thou didst forgive the heinousness of my sin.

Upon this account will every pious man pray unto Thee,
In the season when Thou mayest be found.

Truly, when the mighty waters overflow,
They shall not reach unto him.

7 THOU art a covert unto me;

THOU guardest me from distress;

THOU dost encompass me with songs of deliverance.

8 "I will instruct thee,

9

"And shew thee the way wherein thou shouldest walk; "I will counsel thee,

"MINE eye shall be upon thee.

"Be

ye not like the horse or the mule,

"Which have no understanding,

"Whose mouth must be restrained with bridle and curb,

"Or they will not come nigh unto thee."

10 Many are the troubles of the wicked;

But loving-kindness encompasseth him who trusteth in JEHOVAH. 11 Rejoice in JEHOVAH and exult, ye righteous, And sing aloud, all ye upright in heart.

PSALM XXXIII.

1 SING aloud of JEHOVAH, ye righteous,

Praise is becoming to the upright.

2 Praise ye JEHOVAH with the harp,

With the ten-stringed lute hymn ye unto Him..

3 Sing unto Him a new song,

Strike sweetly with shouts of triumph.

4 For the word of JEHOVAH is true,

And He is faithful in all His doings.

5 HE loveth righteousness and equity;

6

The earth is filled with the loving-kindness of JEHOVAH.

By the word of JEHOVAH were the heavens made,

And all their hosts by the breath of His mouth.

7 HE gathered together the waters of the sea as it were in a heap, HE He laid up the great deep great deep as in a treasure-house.

8 Let all the earth stand in awe of JEHOVAH;

Let all the inhabitants of the world fear Him.

9 For He spake, and it was done;

He commanded, and it stood firm.

10 JEHOVAH hath frustrated the counsel of the heathen, He hath made fruitless the devices of the gentiles. 11 The counsel of JEHOVAH standeth firm for everThe devices of His heart through succeeding generations.

12 Happy are the people whose God is JEHOVAH

The nation whom He hath chosen for His own inheritance!

13 JEHOVAH hath looked down out of the heavens,

He hath beheld all the children of men.

14 From the fixed place of His habitation,

He hath looked upon all the inhabitants of the earth.
