trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in man; it is better to trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in princes. Cease ye from man whose breath is in his nostrils; for wherein is he to be accounted of"? :

SECT. 5. A right trust in God supposes that the heart is reconciled to him, and disposed to do his will.

Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass; and he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judg ment as the noon-day. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him; fret not thyself in any ways to do evil; for those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth". The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory. Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it. Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established®. Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee; he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God.

SECT. 6. Such persons may confidently trust in God for protection from dangers, support in trouble, and deliverance from all that is really evil.

There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky. The eternal God is thy refuge, and under

neath are the everlasting arms. Happy art thou, O Israel! Who is like unto thee, O people, saved by the Lord, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency? The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him, and the Lord shall cover him all the day long; and he shall dwell between his shoulders. They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people, from henceforth, even for ever. Trust in him, at all times, ye people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the seas; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God; the holy place of the tabernacles of the most high God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved. God shall help her, and that right early'. The Lord redeemeth the souls of his servants; and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble, and he knoweth them that trust in him". The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runneth into it, and is safe'. In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence*; he is a buckler to all them that trust in him'. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge, and my fortress; my God, in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust; his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by

night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noon-day. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee". Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways". The angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear . him, and delivereth them. O taste and see that God is good; blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

The fear of man bringeth a snare; but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord, shall be safe". Therefore turn thou to thy God; keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid; yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. Be not afraid of sudden fear; neither for, the desolation of the wicked when it cometh. For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken'. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved; he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold he that keepeth Israel, shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper, the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night; the Lord shall preserve thee from all evil; he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore'. He that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about*.

In the Lord I put my trust; how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain"? The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him*. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh

my help. My help cometh from the Lord, who made heaven and earth'. The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. My soul, wait thou only upon God, for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock, and my salvation; he is my defence, I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, and my refuge is in God. I have trusted also in the Lord; therefore I shall not slide". I waited patiently for the Lord, and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. Many shall see it and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom will I trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. I am like a green olive in the house of my God; I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song". I laid me down, and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about'. The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth, and with my song will I praise him. The Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel'. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. The God of Israel is he that giveth strength

and power unto his people". Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.

SECT. 7. The promises of God to his people lay a sure foundation for their hope and confidence in him.

Thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not; for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine. Fear thou not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God. I will strengthen thee, yea I will help thee, yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness". Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else. My righteousness is near, my salvation is gone forth, and mine arm shall judge the people; the isles shall wait on me, and on mine arm shall they trust. At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the holy One of Israel. And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands; neither respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves or the images. And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance for ever. And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places'. In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength. He that putteth his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain". they shall not be ashamed that wait for me'. the Lord is a God of judgment; blessed are all they that wait for him. In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not; and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack. The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy ; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing'.
