Les coupables étaient des meilleures familles de Rome. Cependant le peuple n'avait les yeux que sur les fils de Brutus. L'assemblée n'avait aucun sentiment de tendresse pour des traîtres, pour des ingrats envers la patrie, pour des enfans indignes d'un tel père, il n'y avait point de supplice assez grand pour eux: mais si l'on n'était pas touché de compassion pour ces jeunes gens, on gémissait sur le sort du consul. Tout le peuple joignit ses larmes à celles des coupables. Brutus, ayant fait faire silence, demanda aux coupables s'ils avaient quelque chose à dire pour leur défense; il répéta cet avis jusqu'à trois fois, puis, voyant qu'ils ne répondaient rien, il prononça lui-même leur sentence. Se tournant ensuite vers ses officiers, il dit : « Licteurs, faites votre devoir.» Témoin de l'exécution, il vit tomber la tête de ses fils. M. Guillon Lethière exposa ce tableau au salon de 1795; il eut alors un grand succès qui n'a pas été démenti depuis. On a pu le voir long-temps exposé dans la galerie du Luxembourg. A slave having imparted the names of the traitors, they were all arrested. At the same moment the consuls ascended the tribunal and ordered the prisoners to be brought before them. The letter they had written to Tarquin was read to them. The accused belonged to the first families in Rome; but the people's attention was fixed on the sons of Brutus only. The assembly had no feeling of pity for traitors, men ungrateful towards their country, for sons, unworthy of such a father: no punishment was deemed too severe for them. But if no compassion arose for these young men, the fate of the Consul was bewailed. The whole mass of the people joined their tears to those of the criminals. Brutus having commanded silence, asked the accused if they had any thing to say in their defence this he repeated thrice. Seeing they replied not, he himself pronounced the sentence: then turning to his Officers, he said to them: «Lictors do your duty,» and saw the heads of his sous fall off. : : M.
