Lorsque Jésus-Christ eut fait la dernière cène avec ses apótres, << il se leva de table, quitta ses habits, et ayant pris un linge, il s'en ceignit. Après il mit de l'eau dans un bassin et commença à laver les pieds de ses disciples et à les essuyer avec le linge : il vint à Simon Pierre, et Pierre lui dit : Quoi! Seigneur! vous me laveriez les pieds. Jésus lui répondit : Vous ne savez pas maintenant ce que je fais, mais vous le saurez par la suitc. Pierre lui dit : Vous ne me laverez jamais les pieds. Jésus lui répondit : Si je ne vous lave, vous n'aurez point de part avec moi. Simon lui dit alors: Seigneur, non-seulement les pieds, mais aussi les mains et la tête. » Tel est l'instant représenté dans ce tableau, par Jérôme Muzziano, souvent nommé en France, Mucian ou Mutien. Les figures sont de grandeur naturelle. Ce tableau, peint à la colle, fut fait pour le cardinal de Lenoncourt, alors archevêque de Reims, qui le laissa à son église. Depuis, les chanoines en firent présent au duc d'Orléans, régent; mais son fils, en ayant fait faire une copie à l'huile par Vanloo, il rendit l'original à l'église de Reims, où il est encore maintenant. After Jesus Christ's last supper with his Apostles; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then cometh he to Simon Peter : and Peter said unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. » This is the moment represented in the picture by Girolamo Muzziano, often called, by the French, Jerome Mutien, or Mucian. The figures are of the size of life. This picture which is painted in distemper, was executed for the Cardinal de Lenoncourt, then Archbishop of Rheims; who left it to his Church. Subsequently the Canons made a present of it to the Duke of Orleans, Regent; but his son having had a copy in oil taken of it by Vanloo, returned the original to Rheims, where it is now.
