ROSSITER JOHNSON

Does he paint? he fain would write a poem ;
Does he write? he fain would paint a picture,-
Put to proof art alien to the artist's,

Once, and only once, and for One only.

PUBLISHERS' NOTE.

66

This book was originally announced under the tile of

Single Famous Poems." Editor and publishers all had misgivings as to whether that title would convey a definite ide of the contents; but no better one suggested itself. On the eve of publication, the editor being in Lurope, and it being too late to consult him, a friend suggests the title the voline now bears, and which it seems marvelous was not tought of before. It has been adopted after consultation with those best able to conjecture the editor's views. No doubt is felt of his ultimate approval, yet it seems but fair t› thus palicly relieve him from all responsibility.

It is, perhaps, superfluous to explain a term that is almost current cin, but it is barely possible that some purchaser-not the kind of a one, how ver, who is apt to read prefatory matter-my as we be told that the "Single-Poem Poets " ant convention all understood to be those whom the He has vistol bit once, but those whose hold on general regation depends, justly or unjustly, on the result of but cne communion with her.

Telt r's preface explains this mo e specifically, and also jts by fitting it perfectly, the new title his friends have scled, although it was written for the old one.
