ITALIAN SCHOOL. oecoe ANDREA VANUCCI. **ccoo FLORENCE.

THE HOLY FAMILY,

CALLED,

LA VIERGE AU SAC.

Although we have preserved to this picture the title of the Holy Family, still we think that it ought to be classed among the Riposos in Egypt, because of the incident of St. Joseph, who, resting on a travelling bag, is busied in reading. Thence has come its bye-name of the Vierge au sac, under which this painting is often mentioned.

Andrea Vanucci, generally called Andrea del Sarto, from the circumstance of his being the son of a tailor, did, in 1573, this beautiful and grand composition to adorn the monastery of the Padri Serviti, at Florence. It is one of that master's best works. Nothing, says Richardson, can be conceived more striking, having more life, gracefulness, and beauty. This painting is in very good preservation. Raphael Morghen gave, in 1795, a highly esteemed engraving from this picture, perfectly rendering the original.

Width 10 feet 7 inches ? height 5 feet 3 inches?
