The following Essays were written at various times, after long and often repeated residences in England. They not only reproduce impressions, but also recapitulate the studies to which such residences gave rise. Published originally in periodicals for the most part, they have been enlarged, revised, and are here for the first time presented in a complete form. Unity of place, object, and tone, if I may be allowed the expression, lends them a certain esoteric connection, justifying their appearance in their present form; although they cannot claim to be considered in a systematic sense as a perfect whole.
Everywhere starting from some important point in the history of literature and education, the Author of these Sketches has endeavoured to seize, here and there, out of the isolated periods
