The Designs and Extent of the Death of


1. THAT the prophecies of his death and sufferings might be fulfilled. *

“ I was daily with

you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled. And the scripture' was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors. I They said, therefore, among themselves, Let 'Us not renc it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be'; that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now ac

complished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. For these things were done that the scriptures should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again, an. other scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced."**

To fulfil and abolish the law of commanda ments, contained in ordinances, or the cerimo. nial dispensation, and thus break down the middle wall of partition between Jews and Gentiles, and reconcile both to God, in one body, by the cross, &c. and to redeem us from that law. “ For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the mid dle wall of partition between us; having abola ished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of

commandments contained in ordinances; for
to make in himself of twain one new man, so
making peace : and that he might reconcile
both unto God in one body by the cross, having

5. To confirm and ratify, seal and establish, his testament, doctrine, " mission, &c. "And he shall confirm the covenant with many for orie week ; and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease. And, as they were eating, Jesus tork bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Pake, eat; this is my body And he took the cup and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is my
