THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA met, agreeably to appointment, in the Fort Street Presbyterian Church, in the city of DETROIT, Michigan, on Thursday, the 16th day of May, A.D. 1872, at 11 o'clock A.M., and was opened with a sermon by the Rev. ZEPHANIAH M. HUMPHREY, D.D., the Moderator of the last Assembly, on 1 Corinthians 12:4, 5, 6: "Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but the same God which worketh all in all.”

After the sermon, the Assembly was constituted with prayer.

The Committee of Arrangements reported, recommending that the Assembly now adjourn until 3 o'clock P.M.; that, immediately upon the organization of the Assembly, and the election of Moderator and Clerks, the Assembly again adjourn until 74 o'clock P.M., to celebrate the Lord's Supper. The report was adopted.

Adjourned until 3 o'clock P.M.

Concluded with prayer.

THURSDAY, May 16th, 3 o'clock P.M.

The Assembly met, and was opened with prayer.

The minutes of the morning session were read and approved.

The Committee on Commissions reported, and the following persons were recognized as duly appointed Commissioners to this General Assembly, and their names were entered on
