Songs of the Free and Hymns of Christian Freedom

A compilation of abolitionist poetry (first published in 1836) authored by the important figures of the day, including three by Whittier - evidently their first appearances in print - Reginald Heber, Chapman, Garrison, Sigourney, Martineau, Mrs. Hemans, Bryant, and others. Many of these poems deal directly with slavery in America including, Prayer of the Colored Mother of New England, The American Female Slave, Hunting of Men and Lament of the Free African for Mungo Park.
