The Gospel. St Matth. xiii. 24.

HE kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which fowed good feed in his field: But while men flept, his enemy came and fowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was fprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares alfo. So the fervants of the houfholder came and faid unto him, Sir, didft not thou fow good feed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He laid unto them, An enemy hath done this. The fervants faid unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he faid, Nay; left while ye gather up the tares, ye root up alfo the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harveft; and in the time of harveft I will fay to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

On the COLLECT for the fixth Sunday after the Epiphany. O God, whofe only begotten Son quitted his bleffed immortality, and was manifefted for this purpose, that he might deftroy the works of the devil (Jobu iji. 8.) and that he might make us fons of God, (Gal. iv. 6.) and heirs of falvation, (Heb. i. 14.) grant us therefore, we pray thee, thy heavenly grace, to purify ourfelves even as he is pure, (John . 3.) that when he fhall appear at his fecond coming in the clouds of

The Epiftle. 1 St John iii. 1.

Ehold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed

upon us, that we fhould be called the fons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, becaufe it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the fons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we fhall be: but we know that when he fhall appear, we fhall be like him; for we fhall fee him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Whofoever committeth fin, tranfgreffeth alfo the law: for fin is the tranfgreffion of the law. And ye know that he was manifefted to take away our fins; and in him is no fin: Whofoever abideth in him, finneth not: whofoever finneth, hath not feen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you he that doeth righteoufnefs, is righteous even as he is righteous. He that committeth fin, is of the devil: for the devil finneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifefted, that he might deftroy the works of the devil.

The Gospel. St Matt. xx. 1.

HE Kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an

houfholder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour, and faw others ftanding idle in the market-place, and faid unto them, Go ye alfo into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. Again he went out about the fixth and ninth hour, and did likewife. And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others ftanding idle, and faith unto them, Why ftand ye here all the day idle? They fay unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He faith unto them, Go ye alfo into the vine. yard, and whatsoever is right that fhall ye receive. So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard faith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the laft unto the firft. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they fuppofed that they should have received more; and they likewife received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the good-man of the houfe, faying, Thele laft have wrought but one hour, and thou haft made them equal unto us which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he anfwered one of them, and faid, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didft not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this laft, even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil because I am good? So the last shall be firft, and the first laft: for many be called, but few chofen.
