L. iv. 16-30.

Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day."

66

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias; and when he had opened the book, he found the place where it is written; “ The spirit of the Lord is upon me; because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord." And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down; and the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them; "This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears." And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth, and they said; "Is not this Joseph's

son ?"

And he said unto them; "Ye will surely say unto me this proverb; Physician, heal thyself;' whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country." And he said; "Verily, I say unto you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven

was shut
up three years and six months, when
great famine was throughout all the land; but
unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto
Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that
was a widow. And many lepers were in Is-
rael in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and
none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman
the Syrian."

And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust him out of the city; and led him unto the brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong; but he, passing through the midst of them, went his way.

And it came to pass, that as the people 1 pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret; and saw two ships standing by the lake; but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land; and he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

Now, when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon; " Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught."

And Simon, answering, said unto him; "Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing; nevertheless, at thy word I will let down the net." And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of

fishes; and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come, and help them; and they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying; Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken; and so was also James and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon; "Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men." And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

And it came to pass, that as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him; "Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples."

And he said unto them; "When ye pray, say; Our father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil."" And he said unto them; "Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him; Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to

set before him?' And he from within shall
answer and say; 'Trouble me not; the door
is now shut, and my children are with me in
bed; I cannot rise and give thee." I say unto
you, though he will not rise and give him, be-
cause he is his friend, yet because of his im-
portunity he will rise and give him as many
as he needeth. And I say unto you; Ask,
and it shall be given you; seek, and
ye shall
find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
For every one that asketh, receiveth; and he
that seeketh, findeth; and to him that knock-
eth, it shall be opened. If a son shall ask
bread of any of you that is a father, will he
give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he
for a fish give him a serpent? or if he shall
ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If
ye then, being evil, know how to give good
gifts unto your children, how much more shall
your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to
them that ask him ?"

CHAPTER VII.

Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles.

2-53.

Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at J. vii. hand. His brethren therefore said unto him; Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou do

For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world." (For neither did his brethren believe in him.)

Then said Jesus unto them; "My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready. The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. Go ye up unto this feast; I go not up yet unto this feast, for my time is not yet full come.' "" When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said; "Where is he?" And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him. For some said; "He is a good man;" others said; "Nay; but he deceiveth the people." Howbeit, no man spake openly of him, for fear of the Jews. Now about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught. And the Jews marvelled, saying; "How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?"

Jesus answered them, and said; "My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory; but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true,
