Or this.

O THOU great and glorious Lord! who fillest all things living with plenteousness, to thee do we lift up our souls, praising thee in all thy wondrous works which we behold; the earth is full of thy mercies; and through thy blessed word we know all things shall work together for good to those that love thy name. O fill us with such love of thee, that, conscious of our own unworthiness, and comparing the wickedness of our thoughts with the purity which the Gospel requires, we may each feel and confess our sins, and forsake them in repentance and amendment of life, casting ourselves upon thy promised mercy in Jesus Christ, and beseeching thee to make clean our hearts within us, and take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

Most merciful Father! grant us to covet with an ardent mind those things which please thee, that we may search them and know them truly, and fulfil them perfectly, to the praise of thy holy name. Teach us

to do good unto all men, and to love our neighbours as ourselves. Make us diligent in the duties of our several callings;-support us with thy grace under all assaults of the enemies of our salvation, the world, the flesh, and the devil. Hold thou us up, and we shall be safe. May we never forget the account we must each hereafter give of the talents now entrusted to our charge, and

under thy merciful guiding may the thoughts of our hearts and the conduct of our lives be ever such as we shall wish them to have been when we lie down to die.

O Lord, our Redeemer, in thee do we put our trust, let us not be brought to confusion; but deliver us in thy righteousness, mercifully look upon us, and save us; and so order our lives according to thy holy will, that we may at all times be ready for the hour of death, and for the day of judgment. Grant this, O merciful God, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

DIRECTIONS

FOR

EVENING PRAYER.

It is again recommended that a short portion of Scripture be read before prayer; or if no Scripture is read, then the following sentences to prepare the mind:

By the mercy of God, we are safely brought to the close of another day. Let us thank Him for all His goodness. Let us beg that He will pardon our many transgressions; and send His Holy Spirit, that we may daily learn to love Him more and serve Him better.

This may be repeated before the prayers for each evening, and afterwards the suffrages, the Lord's Prayer, Collects, and benediction, as in the morning, or at page 80.

EVENING PRAYERS.

SUNDAY EVENING.

ALMIGHTY and merciful Father; we acknowledge thy goodness, which has safely preserved us to this hour: make us every day more sensible of thy mercy. We thank thee for all the benefits which thou hast bestowed upon us. Above all, we thank thee for calling us to the knowledge of thy blessed Son, Jesus Christ. Teach us to devote ourselves entirely to Him, who died to save us from our sins. Make us faithful and obedient to Him; that we may evermore dwell in Him, and He in us. May we love to hear His Gospel taught, and desire to know and do His will. Pardon the coldness of our prayers. Increase our faith, that we may pray more earnestly. Send thy Holy Spirit to strengthen us when we are weak, and to restore us when we fail.

Assist with thy blessing the labours of thy ministering servants in this parish. Make them to look up to thee for help; and teach them that they may teach us. Let them not labour in vain; but let all the people turn to thee and be saved: let sinners depart from

their evil ways, and thy servants grow in grace, and in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. Prosper the endeavors of those good men, who desire to teach thy Gospel to the heathen make the way of salvation more widely known, and increase the number of those who serve thee, and trust in thy blessed Son.

Take us, O Lord, into thy care this night. If thou shouldest bring us safely to another day, we shall have again to engage in the concerns of this life: may we carry a Christian spirit with us! Let no earthly cares turn away our thoughts from the one thing needful; let no temptation make us forget the truths which we are taught, but enable us to lead an honest, sober, industrious, and godly life always remembering the great day when we must appear before thee to give an account of our works.

Into thy care we commend ourselves, and our friends and relations, this night and for ever; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Lord have mercy upon us! &c., as at page 80.

Or this.

O LORD GOD of the Sabbath, suffer us again to gather ourselves together before thee as a Christian family, and to close this sacred day with prayer and praise; and let thy Holy Spirit be with us for Jesus Christ's sake.
