make to themselves a name, they spare no efforts to corrupt all around them. They are striving, in particular, to gain over the young, as the best means to perpetuate their opinions and practices. These sons of Belial will treat you with great attention--they will invite you to mingle with their convivial assemblies, and will strive to amuse and dissipate your minds by various arts. They will profess to be your warm friends and admirers, and that they are devoted to your happiness. They will tell you that you have been laid under unreasonable restraints by bigotry and superstition; and that they wish to deliver you from the yoke of bondage; and that if you will listen to them, they will guide you to a freedom and a liberality which become the dignity of man. With such fair speeches in their mouths, they will endeavour to root out all moral and religious principles from your minds, and to fix you in the belief that the bible is a forgery, and that nature is the only guide to happiness. If you have a taste for reading, they will put into your hands such novels, or other books, as are suited to instil the poison which they wish to infuse. If you listen to such apostles of Satan, your minds and manners will be de

bauched, and you will bring endless misery upon yourselves.

DEAR YOUTH,

"Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go keep her, for she is thy life. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away." Be not the companions of fools, but walk with the wise. Be convinced of your sins, confess them to God, and seek for pardoning mercy through the Son of his love. Spend your days under the influence of holy fear, and you will experience the divine protection in life and in death. "Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him." Joseph, Samuel, David, Obadiah, Daniel, Timothy, and other pious youths, are witnesses of the gracious care which the Lord taketh of his people in times of temptation, and under all the circumstances of life. Forget not that you are mortal, and that you may be cut down in the bloom of youth. Prepare to die. I pray that you may long be continued in the world, and be made blessings to society. You are the hope of the commonwealth, and of the church of

God. May you be faithful in both these relations; and be highly instrumental of promot ing the cause of righteousness and peace, when we who are now in the meridian, or in the decline of life, shall be numbered with the dead.

DEAR CHILDREN,

While I am addressing the people of my charge, I cannot forget you. Remember the texts which I here often charged you to trea sure up in your minds and hearts. The two following I have mentioned to you oftener than any other. The first is in Psalm xxxiv. 11. "Come, ye children, hearken unto me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord." The other is in Matthew xix. 14. "But Jesus said, suffer little children, and forbid them not to come unto me; for of such is the kingdom of heaven." If you do not fear God, he will be angry with you every day; and if you do not fear him while you live, you must be miserable after death. You were born in sin; and you must repent of your evil desires, thoughts, words and actions, and come to Christ, if you would go to heaven. May the blessed Saviour take you into the arms of his mercy, and sanctify

your hearts by his spirit. Obey your pa rents, as Christ did his, and keep all God's commandments. Every day retire, and pray to God that he would make you his children, and fit you to serve him in time, and to enjoy him in eternity. You do not know how

soon you may die. death, without delay; and it will be well with you, whether you are laid in the grave in childhood, or in whatever age. Read daily in the bible. It is the book of God; and may it be blest to make you wise unto salvation.

MY BRETHREN AND FRIENDS,

I have set before you the manner in which we ought to spend life. I have taken a brief view of the dealings of divine providence with this church and congregation; and have warned and counselled you with unreserved freedom. May God, by his spirit, impress your hearts with the truths and duties which have been inculcated, and engage you to pass the time of your sojourning here in fear.

It is more than twenty-seven years since I was consecrated to the work of the gospel ministry, and to the pastoral care of this church. I desire to thank Christ Jesus, our

Lord, for putting me into an office which is more important than any other which has been committed to man; and for continuing me in it so long. I feel myself to be unworthy of the sacred trust; that I have very imperfectly illustrated and enforced the religion of the gospel in my discourses, and that I have fallen awfully short in a practical conformity to it. I can at the same time declare to you, that, in my nearest views of the eternal world, the religion which I have preached, is the religion by which I wish to live, and to die. The doctrine which I have taught, I am fully persuaded, is the doctrine which is according to godliness. Daily search the scriptures, as did the ancient Bereans, with a humble and devout frame of mind, that you may become firmly established in the faith.

I trust that I have not laboured among you wholly in vain. That the feeble efforts of a sinful worm of the dust, should, in any instance, be crowned with success, can be attributed to nothing but rich and sovereign grace. Accept my unfeigned thanks for the many tokens of respect and friendship which I have received from you, in the course of my ministry. I can never forget the ten
