The above copy is perfect in every respect. Romæ, apud Antonium Bladum Asulanum, s. a. FIRST EDITION. A copy sold in Lord Guildford's sale for 241. It is a most important book, from its connection with the ecclesiastical history of the country. Henry VIII. was alarmed at the receipt of a copy, though Pole promised not to publish it [see the Biographia Britannica], and ordered Archbishop Cranmer and the bishops to draw up an answer to it. Latimer likewise preached against it, [see Strype.] Henry first endeavoured to inveigle Pole into England, to explain to him the doctrine of the Pope's supremacy, and failing in this, offered 50,000 crowns for his head, and caused his brothers to be arrested and executed. The Pope considered Pole in imminent danger from Henry's emissaries, and ordered a guard for the protection of his person. Such is the very great rarity of the book, that Harley, Earl of Oxford, could never obtain a copy. His late Majesty's library, rich in every department connected with the civil and ecclesiastical history of the country, does not possess a copy. This edition is not mentioned by Dr. Dibdin, in his Library Companion, nor by De Bure, Brunet, or Dr. Adam Clarke.
