1585

A most interesting historical volume, and highly important, as attempting to prove that Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, who had been confined in the Tower, on suspicion of being concerned in Throckmorton's conspiracy, did not shoot himself, as generally accredited, but was murdered by others. That part also which relates to the edict of Q. Elizabeth against the Popish priests, expelling them the kingdom, is very curious and valuable.

"

At the end is a long letter from England, containing all the news of the day. Particulars of Sir Francis Drake, the pirate.' Death of W. Parry, also of Atfield, for distributing Cardinal Allen's book, in answer to the Justitia Britannica. Notices of Walsingham, Cecil and Leicester, ascendancy of the great bear, in allusion to Lord Leicester's armorial bearings, and his influence with the queen, &c. &c.

Sevilla, 1577

Robertson, in the History of America, speaking of the loss of part of the works of Cieza de Leon, says,--" This loss is amply supplied by Don Augustin Zaratè, in the above work. Zarate was a man of rank and education, and employed in Peru as comptroller-general of the public revenue. His history, whether we attend to its matter or composition, is a book of considerable merit: as he had an opportunity to be well informed, and seems to have been inquisitive with respect to the manners and transactions of the Peruvians, great credit is due to his testimony."

Venetia, per Pietro de Zohane, 1494

This is an edition of very great rarity, and has escaped the researches of nearly all bibliographers. Panzer mentions only the latter part [Sonetti], as if it was a separate publication from the former; they are both evidently by the same printer, and most probably published at the same time.

The above volume was purchased by the late possessor for 157. 15s. The first book was unknown to Nicolas Antonio. The name of the translator is found in his dedicatory epistle to the great Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordova. The second work is printed in the Gothic type, and adorned with the usual wood-cuts, which are very spirited and brilliant. Such is the rarity of it, that it is not only unknown to Spanish writers, but Nic. Antonio asserts that the above translation, by Ant. de Obregon, first appeared at Salamanca in 1581, nearly fifty years after the publication of the present edition. Nothing but the extraordinary rarity of it could have excused so wide an error. The translation is in verse, surrounded by the copious glosa. 1911 Petronii Arbitri Satyrici Fragmenta quæ extant, first edition, 4to. vellum, rare, ll. ls. Venetiis, 1499

"It is justly observed by the noble owner of this copy (Earl Spencer), that the type of the present impression resembles that of Sixtus Reisinger. Upon a full consideration of the impression, as it lies open before me, I am doubtful whether it be not the FIRST impression of the Latin version of F. Aretin." Sold in Dr. Askew's sale for 4l., and in Sir M. Sykes's for 31. 5s.

This very scarce and interesting edition is amply described in the Bibliothee Spenceriana, vol. vii. pp. 90, 91. Dr. Dibdin there states his opinion that it was printed by Vandelin de Spira; and Dr. Kloss, in a note, adds, that it was executed about the year 1471. Sold in the La Valliere sale for 200 francs.
