LOUISVILLE, KY., THURSDAY, May 18, 1911. The Fifty-First General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States met today at II a. m. in the Second Presbyterian Church, and was opened with a sermon by the Rev. J. W. Bachman, D. D., the Moderator of the last Assembly, from Matthew 17:5: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him."

After the sermon, the Stated Clerk announced the organization of the Presbytery of Cisco in the Synod of Texas.

The Rev. Russell Cecil, D. D., a commissioner from the Presbytery of East Hanover, was elected Moderator; the Rev. L. Ross Lynn, a commissioner from the Presbytery of Suwanee, and the Rev. E. E. Gillespie, a commissioner from the Presbytery of Bethel, were elected Temporary Clerks.

Rev. R. H. Fleming, D. D., on behalf of the Ad Interim Committee on the Semi-Centennial Celebration, announced the inability of Rev. W. W. Moore, D. D., to be present on account of sickness, and asked that the Rev. Theron H. Rice, D. D., be substituted in his place. The request was granted.

Rev. E. B. Sanford, D. D., Secretary of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, was invited to address the Assembly. The Moderator expressed, for the Assembly, its appreciation of the address, stating that the address would be referred to the Committee on Foreign Correspondence, when appointed.

It was ordered that a gavel, to be presented by the Sessions of the First Presbyterian Church, Augusta, Ga., be presented in connection with the Semi-Centennial Celebration tomorrow.

The annual reports of the Executive Committees of Foreign Missions, Home Missions, Christian Education and Ministerial Relief and Publication and Sabbath School Work were presented by the respective Secretaries, and were referred to the Standing Committees on these causes, when appointed.

The Rev. Egbert W. Smith, D. D., pastor of this church, suggested the following hours of the daily sessions of the Assembly, which were adopted: From 9:30 a. m. to 12:30 p. m.; from 2 p. m. to 5:30 p. m.; and from 8 p. m. to adjournment at will.

Communications from the Warren Memorial Presbyterian Church, of Louisville, and from the Y. M. C. A., extending courtesies to the Assembly, were acknowledged with thanks.

The Assembly then took recess until 8 p. m., closing with prayer.

EVENING SESSION.

8 p. m.

The Assembly met and entered into the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the organization of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, Rev. R. H. Fleming, D. D., by request of the Moderator, presiding. After devotional exercises, the roll of the first General Assembly, which met in Augusta, Ga., in 1861, was read. The Assembly was then addressed by Rev. Henry Alexander White, D. D., LL. D., on the "Origin of the Presbyterian Church in the United States.'

The Assembly then adjourned until 9:30 a. m. tomorrow, closing with prayer.

Second Day

FRIDAY, May 19, 1911.

The Assembly met at 9:30 a. m. and engaged in devotional exercises, conducted by Rev. G. T. Storey.

The Minutes of yesterday's sessions were read and approved.

The Stated Clerk announced that the following additional commissioners had been enrolled: Rev. A. J. Wilkinson, of the Presbytery of Central Alabama; Rev. Jno. V.
