PREFACE.

THE Editor, after many weeks delay through pressure of work, is at last able to issue the Revised Edition of the Words of the Anthems in use in Chester Cathedral. Several of the very old Anthems (the music of which, in many cases, has become obsolete) have been expunged, and some of the best compositions of our modern Church Composers inserted in their stead.

Though conscious of many defects, the Editor hopes that the want of a cheap and comprehensive Anthem Book has been supplied, and that it may prove an incentive to devotion during that portion of the Cathedral Service, which, though rendered by the Choir alone, is intended as an act of Worship for the whole congregation.

I

ANTHEMS.

ABOVE all praise and all majesty, Lord, Thou reignest evermore. Hallelujah.

[blocks in formation]

ABOVE Him stood the seraphim; and one cried to another, Holy, Holy, Holy, is God the Lord, the Lord of Sabaoth: His glory hath filled all the earth.

[blocks in formation]

ACQUAINT thyself with God, and be at peace with Him: and lay up His words in thine heart. If thou return to the Almighty, put away iniquity from thee. Then shall He be thy defence, and thy delight. Thou shalt make thy prayer unto Him, and He will hear thee. The Lord will deliver the righteous: He will save the humble man.

[blocks in formation]

ALL go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. And now Lord, what is my hope? truly my hope is even in Thee. The dust shall return to the earth as it was; and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. We have the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead. For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

[blocks in formation]

ALL men, all things, all that has life and breath, sing to the Lord. Hallelujah. Praise the Lord with lute and harp
