THE doctrine of this treatise is confessedly one of great importance. He that is true has declared of every individual of the human race, "ye must be born again;" and hence it vitally concerns all to know, the nature of the change required, the great cause by which it is produced, and the means which are rendered efficacious in its production. It is a privilege to listen to such an instructer as Charnock on these topics; one not only deeply versed in the Scriptures, but experimentally acquainted with the truths which he undertakes to inculcate.

In the following work, the language of the author has not been materially altered. The chief difference between it and the original, is the omission of numerical divisions, and of some points which did not appear necessary to a complete view of the subject. As it is, it is committed to the reader in the humble hope, that its perusal may be attended with a divine blessing.
