Seventhly, Charge upon thy felf with all ferioufneffe, that great and neceffary duty of daily watchfulneffe.

Be not like those whofe manner is to spend a little time in praier in the morning, and then to take their leave (as it were) of God, for all the day after; but unto earneft and fervent prajer, adde ferious watchfulneffe.

And for thy better direction herein, I fhall here first give thee a short draught, or scheme

of

of the feveral particulars I treat of under this head.

First, There are foure things thou must watch over; Namely,

1. Thy Thoughts.
2. Thy Affections.
3. Thy Words,
4. Thy Actions.

Secondly, Six things thou must watch against ; Namely,

1. Against thofe fins thou art most inclined to. by temper, and natural conftitution,

2. Against the fins thou art most obnoxious to, by reafon of thy particular calling, condition, ftate, and courfe of life.

3. Against the fins of the times and places wherein thou livest.

4. Against all occafions and temptations that thou forefeeft are likely to endanger thy Joule.

5. Against dishonouring God in the use of lawful things.

6. Against Errour and feduction of mind. Thirdly, One thing thou must watch for ; Namely,

For opportunities to glorifie God; to de good to others; and to receive good to thy owne +foule.

The Motives to quicken thee to this duty are these three.

1. Moft

1. Most of the fins we commit, we fall into through carelefneffe, and want of watchfulnesse.

2. The Devil the tempter is alwaies watchfull · to betray us:

3. The neceffity of perfeverance, whereunto a concurrence of our care and diligence is required.

First, The first thing I would advise thee carefully to watch over is thy thoughts. Be very careful, not to lodge, or entertain any finfull thoughts in thy mind: Sinful thoughts are the Reubens, the first-born of originall fin, and the beginning of its ftrength. They exceedingly defile the foul, and are the firft movers to evil, and very abominable in the fight of God. Oh what reafon have we to be humbled for the vain, wanton, foolish, proud, wrathful, cove tous, blafphemous, idle, ufeleß, unconcerning thoughts that do many times annoy us.

Let us therefore confider of fome remedies against finfull thoughts.

1. Settle in thy mind a ftrong and deep ap prehenfion of Gods Omni-prefence, and Omni Science; and over-awe thy thoughts with this, that they are all feen, and obferved, and taken notice of by him.

2. Remember, that though in the worlds wicked proverb, thoughts are free; because man cannot difcern them, nor punish them, yet they are not free from Gods obfervation, not from his Lam, which being fpiritual, bindes R
