pericarditis ended in purulent affusion, and so did pleurisy. The liver was prone to change, especially to scirrhosis; but, according to the statistics adduced, the kidneys did not suffer in the same proportion. But there is one important feature commonly overlooked, the Medical Times and Gazette says, in these and such-like inquiries: that is, the nature and quality of the liquor consumed. Much more depends on these than statistics can show. Where, for instance, is the comparison between good old mellow wine and raw spirits, or between beer of the best Bass or Allsopp tap and that sold in a low beershop? Until these differences can be appreciated by statistics, such papers only tell half their lesson, for it is vain to lay all the evils on the back of alcohol, and none on the other constituents of intoxicating liquors as ordinarily sold.

NUTRITIVE PROPERTIES OF FAT.

Fat is, of all substances, the most nutritive, but requires abundance of air and exercise for its assimilation and digestion. Dr. Cheyne, a celebrated physician of his day, instituted a great number of experiments in relation to the nutritive qualities of the different articles of diet, and found that a person was better supported, and could live longer, on suet pudding, than on any other substance. It is desirable, in an economical point of view, that this should be more generally known.

AMOUNT OF SLEEP REQUIRED.

Dr. Searle, in his volume on "The Blood," observes-" For the amount of sleep required, and the time of seeking repose, the dictates of Nature and common sense are the best counsellors. We see that all the rest of the animal creation are guided instinctively to seek repose when fatigued, and again to rise when refreshed by its influence; and man should do the same whenever he feels, from the exhaustion of exercise of any kind, to require it, instead of following the too common practice of swallowing some excitant or other; although, doubtless, as a general rule, the hours of darkness, as marked out to us by our provident Creator, should be those exclusively devoted to the full measure of the enjoyment of sleep; and for such period, whatever it may be, as its influence lasts, and until we awake refreshed. Upon an average, eight hours for an adult person-the time required by a labouring man-will be a fair proportion. The labourer, in general, goes to bed at nine at night, and rises at five in the morning-when Nature for a great portion of the year is attired in her most lovely garments—and the breezy call of incense-breathing morn,' appears to invite man to its enjoyment. But the hour of retiring to bed in civil life, provided it be before midnight, experience proves to be of no very great

IMPROVED ANALEPTIC PILLS

ARE NOW PREPARED ONLY BY

JAMES

HOLLINGS,

SOLE PROPRIETOR,

4, HANOVER TERRACE, PECKHAM. In Boxes, ls. 1d., Post Free Sixteen Stamps.

The Improved Analeptic Pills stand unequalled by any other Medicine, for Strenthening the tone of the Stomach, relieving most violent Head-ache, and improving the whole Nervous System.

This medicine is not offered to the Public as the pretended discovery of an Empiric, or on the bare theory of the Medical System, but on the authority of a superior character in the Profession, by whom it was administered many years with the highest credit to himself, and great benefit to his patients; likewise, by many years' experience of its present Proprietor. Many who have been afflicted with that species of blindness called Gutta Serena, which is occasioned by a defect in the optic Nerves, and usually baffles every laudable attempt of the Oculist to remove, have been perfectly restored to their sight by the use of these. Pills and the Ophthalmic Ointment.

The Proprietor would still be cautious of raising the hopes of the afflicted, were there not the strongest probability of those hopes being realized, but can, at the same time, with confidence assure them that in every instance in which these Medicines have been used at an early stage of the disorder, they have uniformly succeeded in removing it; and in many cases in which it was so far advanced as to produce total blindness.

The testimony of many respectable persons in London, and in the county of Suffolk, as well as in other parts of the Kingdom, places its superior efficacy as a Nervine beyond dispute.

DIRECTIONS.

For Sick Head-ache.-Two Pills should be taken at night and two in the morning; and if not relieved by eleven in the forenoon, two or three should be taken, and repeated after dinner till the sickness is removed.
