Sivu 65 - Survey of the Department of the Interior and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the Department of Commerce.
Sivu 6 - Electricity consumption could be reduced from 12.3 quads to about 11.0 quads in 1985, compared with 5.4 in 1972. Demand management can further reduce dependence on limited oil and gas supplies by actions that involve switching...
Sivu 10 - Large areas of the United States are known to contain oil shale deposits, but those areas in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming that contain the organic-rich sedimentary rocks of the Green River Formation hold the greatest promise for oil production in the immediate future.
Sivu 20 - ... in lieu of energy, eg, insulation to save fuel. Other potentials for lower energy use have more far-reaching impacts and may be long range in their implementation - they include rationing, altered transportation modes, and major changes in living conditions and life styles. Even severe constraints on energy use can be expected to only slow, not halt, the growth in energy requirements within the time frame of this statement.
Sivu 20 - Solid fuels cannot be used directly in internal combustion engines, for example. Fuel conversion potentials are severely limited in the short term, although somewhat greater flexibility exists in the longer run, and generally involve choices in energy-consuming capital goods.
Sivu 9 - Low level radioactive wastes from normal operation of a nuclear plant must be collected, placed in protective containers, and shipped to a Federallylicensed storage site and buried. High level wastes created within the fuel elements remain there until the fuel elements are processed. Currently, spent fuel is stored at NRC-licensed facilities. Plans call for recovering unused fuels at reprocessing plants, solidifying the wastes, and placing them in storage at a Federal Repository.
Sivu 6 - Hydroelectric power Solar energy Energy imports Oil imports Natural gas pipeline imports Liquefied natural gas imports Geothermal energy Other energy sources Combination of alternatives This section briefly discusses these alternatives. For more detailed information on each of these energy...
Sivu 10 - Oil shale development poses serious environmental problems. With surface or conventional underground mining, it is very difficult to dispose of the huge quantities of spent shale, which occupy a larger volume than before the oil was extracted. Inducing revegetation in an area of oil shale development is difficult and may take more than 10 years.
Sivu 6 - The environmental impacts of a vigorous energy conservation program will be primarily beneficial. The exact nature and magnitude of these impacts will depend on whether there is a net reduction in energy use or whether the reduction is accomplished through technological change and substitutions. For the former, the net impacts will simply be that there are fewer pollutants of all kinds unleashed. As an example...
Sivu 8 - The predominant nuclear system in the United States is the uranium dioxide fueled, light water moderated and cooled nuclear power plant. Research and development is being directed toward other types of reactors, notably the breeder reactor and fusion reactors.
