'Thomas.

the Heirs-Female of Mowbray, and Seagrave, from Thomas of Brotherton, Son to King Edward I.) did enjoy : And by other Letters Patents, bearing Date at the fame time, obtain'd the Grant of divers Mannors, and Lordfhips; and, the next Year, had a new Patent for the Office of Lord Treafurer. In the 13th of Henry VIII. he perform'd the Office of Lord High Steward, at the Tryal of Edward, Duke of Buckingham, and gave Sentence of Death upon him, but not without Tears.

He married two Wives, firft Elizabeth, Daughter and fole Heiress to Sir Frederick Tilney, and Widow of Humphry Bourchier, Lord Berner, by whom he had Iffue eight Sons, three only of which furviv'd him,

viz.

Firft, Thomas, created Earl of Surrey, in his Lifetime; Second, Sir Edward Howard, Knight of the Garter, and Lord Admiral; and Edmund; and three Daughters.

To his fecond Wife, he married Agnes, Daughter of Sir Philip Tilney, Kt. by whom he had Iffue, William, afterwards created Baron Howard of Effingham, (of whom and his Defcendents, more will be faid hereafter :)Thomas, who marrying the LadyMargaret Douglas, Daughter to Margaret, Queen of Scots, Niece to King Henry, was attainted of Treafon, upon fome Sufpicion of his afpiring to the Crown, and died in the Tower of London, in the 29th of Eliz. Anno 1537. Richard another Son, and four Daughters.

Thomas, Earl of Surrey, his Son and Heir, fucceeded him, and upon the Death of his younger Brother, Edward, Lord Admiral, was put in his ftead, in which Command, he did many fignal Services againft the French: Alfo, in the 12th of Henry VIII. was conftituted Lord Deputy of Ireland, where he fupprefs'd the O Neals and O Carrols: Few Years afterwards, he perform'd many fignal Services in France, and was conftituted Lord Treasurer, and made General of the King's whole Army, defign'd to march against the Scots; all this being in his Father's Life-time. Upon his Father's Death, he was again made General of the Army, at that time rais'd, to advance into Scotland, in order to fet the young King free, whom the Duke of Albany kept at Sterling. He afterwards attended the King into France, and was fent chief Ambaffador to the King of France,

to attend him to Nice, and commune with the Pope, in his Delay, touching that King's Divorce. In the 25th of Henry VIII. upon the Surrender of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, he was conftituted Earl Marfhal of England, alfo, Viceroy of Ireland. In the 18th of Henry VIII. he march'd to the Affiftance of the Earl of Shrewsbury, toward fuppreffing that memorable Infurrection, call'd the Pilgrimage of Grace. But after thefe, and many other fignal Services, by the infinuating Perfuafions of fome of the Nobility, who bore him no Good-Will; the King was fo far milled and incens'd against him, that he not only commanded him Prifoner to the Tower, but gave Order for feizing his Goods, and gave Notice to his Ambaffadors abroad, that he and his Son had confpir'd to take upon them the Government, during his Life, and, after his Death, to get the Prince into their Hands: For which, being both attainted in Parliament, his Son loft his Head, and he had far'd little better, had not the Death of the King prevented it. And fo implacable was the Malice of his Enemies, that tho' a Pardon was given, by Proclamation, to all Perfons for what Crimes foever, yet was he particularly excepted.

He married twice: First, Anne, Daughter of King Edward IV. by whom he had Iffue only one Son Thomas, who died young. His Second Wife was Elizabeth, Daughter of Edward Duke of Buckingham, by whom he had Iffue two Sons, Henry, Earl of Surrey, beheaded in his Life-time; and Thomas; alfo a Daughter Mary, married to Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond, natural Son to Henry VIII.

Which Thomas, his fecond Son, having married Eli-Thomas, zabeth, one of the Daughters and Coheirs to John, Lord Viscount Bindon, Marney, had Livery of the Lands of her Inheritance; Collaand, in the Firft Maria, was reftor'd in Blood; and, in teral. the First of Elizabeth, was advanc'd to the Title of Viscount Howard of Bindon, and foon after fummon'd to Parliament.

By Elizabeth, his Wife, he had four Sons; First, Henry, who fucceeded him in his Honour; Second, Thomas; Third, Francis; and, Fourth, Giles; and two Daughters. He had likewife three other Wives, by all which he had but one Son Charles, and one Daugh

ter more: He died, Anno 1582. To whom fucceeded Henry, his eldeft Son; but he dying without Iffue Male, Thomas, his near Brother, enjoy'd the Title of Vifcount Howard of Bindon, and was inftall'd Knight of the Garter, in the 4th of James I. but died without Iffue.

Henry, But we are now to take Notice of the Iffue of Henry, Earl of the eldest Son of Thomas, the laft Duke of Norfolk, Notring (beheaded in his Life-time, as hath been before obCollate ferv'd.) Which Henry, by Frances his Wife, Daughter to John, Earl of Oxford, left two Sons, Thomas and Henry; alfo three Daughters. Which laft Henry, with his three Sifters, Jane, Anne and Catherine, was reftor'd in Blood, in the firft of Elizabeth; and being a Perfon highly efteem'd for his Learning, was fworn of the Privy-Council to King James, created first Lord Howard of Marnhil, and Earl of Northampton, and Lord Privy-Seal; and died Anno 1614.

Surrey.

Having done with this collateral Branch, we come Earl of now to Thomas, the eldeft Son of Henry, Earl of Surrey, beheaded in the Life-time of his Father (as hath been before obferv'd) who, upon the Death of his Grandfather, Thomas Duke of Norfolk, in the First Maria, became his next Hereditary Succeffor, being, the fame Year, fully reftor'd in Blood, and the Act of his Grandfather's Attainders then made void; but, in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth, for his Designs of marrying the Queen of Scots, was caft in Prison, try'd, and beheaded, Anno 1573, 15 of Eliz.

This Thomas married three Wives, by the first of which, Mary, Daughter to Henry Fitz-Alan, Earl of Arundel, he had Philip, his Son and Heir.

Alfo, by his fecond Wife Margaret, Daughter and fole Heir to Thomas, Lord Audley of Walden, and Widow of Henry, a younger Son to John, Duke of Northumberland, he had Iffue two Sons, Thomas, af(4) Vide terwards made Earl of Suffolk, (a) and William; alfo Suffolk. two Daughters, Elizabeth, who died young, and Mar

garet, married to Robert Sackvile, Earl of Dorfet ; which Philip, his Heir, was likewife found Guilty of High Treafon, in the 32d of Eliz. and fix Years after, died Prifoner in the Tower, leaving Iffue by Anne, his Wife, Daughter of Thomas, and Sifter and Coheir to George, Lord Dacres of Gillefland, Thomas, his only Child.

Which Thomas was Parliamentarily reftor'd in Blood, Thomas. in the first Year of the Reign of King James, to all the Titles of Honour, and Precedence, loft by his Father Philip's Attainder, and, in the 19th of the fame Reign, was conftituted Earl-Marshal of England, for Life; alfo, in the 20th of Car. I. created Earl of Norfolk, dying at Padua in Italy, Anno 1646.

He left Iffue, by the Lady Alethea his Wife, Daughter, and one of the Coheirs to Gilbert, Earl of Shrewsbury, two. Sons, furviving Henry, Lord Mon bray and Maltravers; and, Thirdly, Sir William Howard, Knight of the Bath, who by reafon of his Marriage with Mary, Sifter and fole Heir to Henry, Lord Stafford, was, in the 16th of Cha. I. created a Baron of this Realm, by the Title of Lord Stafford, and the the faid Mary, his Wife, a Baronefs. (b).

(b) Vid. This Henry, Lord Mowbray aforefaid, fucceeded his Stafford. Father in his Honours, and took to Wife, Elizabeth, Daughter to Efme Steward, Duke of Lenox, by whom he had Iffue, nine Sons, viz. Thomas, Henry, Philip, Charles, Talbot, Edward, Francis, Bernard, and Efme, and three Daughters.

Norfolk

Which Thomas, Son and Heir to Henry, Earl of Thomas, Arundel, Surrey, and Norfolk, fucceeding him in his Duke of Honours, was, in the 13th of the Reign of King reftor d. Cha. II. reftor'd to the Title of Duke of Norfolk, but dying without Iffue, the Honour defcended to Henry, Lord Howard, of Caftlerifing, (fo created in the 21st of Car. II.) his next Brother, who was alfo in the 24th of Car. II. created Earl of Norwich, and Earl-Marfhal of England, with Limitation of that great Office, to the Heirs-Male of his Body.

Which Henry married the Lady Anne Somerset, Henry. Daughter to Edward Somerfet, Marquis of Worcester, by whom he had Iffue, two Sons and three Daughters; Henry, call'd Earl of Arundel, after his Father was Duke of Norfolk, and Thomas; Lady Anne-Alethea, who died an Infant, Lady Elizabeth, married to Alexander Gordon, Marquis of Huntley, afterwards Duke of Gordon, of the Kingdom of Scotland; and Lady Frances, married to the Marquis Valparefa.

Which Henry, his eldeft Son, fucceeded him in his Henry. Honours, was made Governor of Windfor-Castle, upon

the Death of Prince Rupert, and inftall'd Knight of the Garter, in the firft of King James II. In the Year 1688, upon the Landing of the Prince of Orange, in England, this Duke being then in Norfolk, immediately declar'd for him, and brought over that, and fome Neighbouring Counties to his Intereft, for which, foon after his Royal Highnefs had accepted the Crown of thefe Realms, he was fworn of his Privy-Council, and fo continued to the time of his Death, 1701.

He married Mary, fole Daughter and Heiress to Henry Mordant, Earl of Peterborough; from whom he was divorc'd in the 12th of William III. and leaving no Iffue, was fucceeded by

Thomas, the prefent Duke of Norfolk, Son of Themas Lord Howard, fecond Son of Henry, the Father, and younger Brother of Henry, late Duke of Norfolk : Which Thomas Lord Howard, upon King James's withdrawing, attended that Monarch into France and Ireland, from which laft place, in his Return to Breft, he was caft away at Sea, in the Month of November, 1689. He married, October, 1681, Mary-Elizabeth, Daughter and fole Heiress to Sir John Savile, of Copley, in the County of York, Baronet; by whom he had Iffue five Sons and one Daughter, viz. Thomas Howard, eldest Son, the prefent Duke of Norfolk, born October, 1683; Henry Howard, fecond Son; Edward Howard, third Son Richard Howard, fourth Son, and Philip Howard, fifth Son, all Living. Mary Howard, only Daughter, married to Walter Afton, Efq; Son and Heir to Walter, Lord Forfare, of the Kingdom of Scotland, by whom he hath Iffue

Thomas, the prefent Duke, fucceeded his Uncle in the Year 1701, and married, Anno 1709, Mary, fole Daughter and Heirefs of Sir Nicolas Sherburn, of Sherburn in the County of Lancaster, Baronet.

The first mention'd Henry, Duke of Norfolk, married to his fecond Wife Jane, the Daughter of Robert Bickerton Efq; and had Iffue by her, Lord George Howard, married to Arabella, Daughter and fole Heiress to Sir Edmund Allen, of Hatfield Peverel in Com. Effex, Baronet, Widow of Francis Thomson, of Hambleton in Com, Ebor. Efq; Lord James Howard, died a Batchelor, and Lord Frederick-Henry, born after his Father's Death,
