(Equal Franchise) Bill. [AS AMENDED IN COMMITTEE.] FINANCIAL MEMORANDUM. This Bill which proposes to assimilate the franchises for men and women in respect of parliamentary and local government elections is expected to add about five and a quarter million names to the registers of electors. The present annual cost of the registration of electors is about 614,000l., of which one half, viz.: 307,000l., is paid out of monies provided by Parliament. It is estimated that the cost of registration will be increased in the first year in which the new names are included in the register by 280,000l., of which 140,000l. will be borne by the Exchequer, and in subsequent years by 70,000%., of which 35,000l. will be borne by the Exchequer. It is also anticipated that there will be some increase, the amount of which cannot be estimated but which is not likely to be considerable, in the expenses of returning officers at parliamentary elections, which are paid out of the Exchequer.
