Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou Most High. Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me. Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and from bloody men. They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.-Ps. lix. 1.

Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy. from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity; who wet their tongues like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words.-Ps. lxiv. 1, &c.

Hear me, O Lord; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me, according to the multitude of thy tender mercies. And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily. Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies. Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour; mine adversaries are all before thee.

Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.-Ps. lxix. 16, &c.

In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion. Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me, for thou art my rock and my fortress. Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.—Ps. lxxi. 1.

O God, the proud are risen against me, and the assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul, and have not set thee before them. turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid. Shew me a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed because thou, Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted me.-Ps. lxxxvi. 14.

O Lord of hosts, that judgest righteously, that trieth the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause.-Jer. xi. 20.

Be not a terror unto me; thou art my hope in the day of evil. Let them be confounded that persecute me, but let not me be confounded: let them be dismayed, but let not me be dismayed: bring upon them the day of evil, and destroy them with double destruction.-Jer. xvii. 17.

O Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me. For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the Lord was made a reproach unto me, and a derision daily. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay. For I heard the defaming of many, fear on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.
