Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices. Sol. Song viii. 14.

Oh that thou wouldst rend the heavens, that thou wouldst come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence, as when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence.-Isaiah lxiv. 1, 2.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.-Matt. vi. 10.

Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son.John xvii. 1.

Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.-Rev. xxii. 20.

KING'S PETITIONS.

Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me? Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child? Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us

flesh, that we may eat. I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness. -Numb. xi. 11, &c.

O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of my father; and I am but a little child. I know not how to go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen; a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this, thy so great a people?-1 Kings iii. 7, 8, 9.

Thou hast shewed great mercy unto my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead. Now, O Lord God, let thy promise unto my father be established for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?2 Chron. i. 8, &c.

If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me

at my petition, and my people at my request.— Esther vii. 3.

CAPTIVES' PETITIONS.

Let me go, I pray thee: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren.-1 Sam. xx. 29.

Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried

by the grave of my father, and of my mother.

2 Sam. xix. 37.

Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.-1 Chron. xvi. 35.

Turn again our captivity, as the streams in the south.-Ps. cxxvi. 4.

I am shut up; I cannot go into the house of the Lord.-Jer. xxxvi. 5.

O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee: that thou cause me not to return to the house of

I die there.-Jer. xxxvii. 20.

O Lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee: let my prayer come before

thee: incline thine ear unto my cry; for my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave. I am counted with them

that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength: thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps. Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, I cannot come forth. Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction: Lord, I have called daily unto thee, I have stretched out my hands unto thee. thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Shall thy loving-kindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction? Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? But unto thee have I cried, O Lord; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee. Lord, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me? I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.

MINISTER'S PETITIONS.-FOR ELOQUENCE.

O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant : but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send.-Ex. iv. 10, &c.

AT OPENING A PLACE OF WORSHIP.

Lord God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart. But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee: how much less this house that I have builded? Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O Lord my God, to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer, which thy servant prayeth before thee to-day that thine eyes may be open toward this house night and day: that thou mayest hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall make in this place. And hearken thou to the supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray in this place and hear
