FOR THE USE OF SCHOOLS.
PUBLISHED BY DIRECTION OF THE
COMMISSIONERS OF NATIONAL EDUCATION IN IRELAND.
POR HER MAJESTY'S STATIONERY OFFICE.
THE Commissioners of National Education beg to refer the reader to the Preface of the First Volume of Scripture Lessons, selected from the Old Testament, and also to the First Volume, selected from the New Testament, for a statement of their views in issuing these Extracts from the Sacred Volume, and of the principles on which they are compiled.
This Volume, which is the second drawn from the Old Testament, brings down the history from the migration of Jacob and his family to Egypt, till the arrival of the Israelites on the Eastern bank of the Jordan, and the death of Moses.
The Commissioners recommend this Volume to the Patrons and Conductors of National Schools, with the same earnestness and unanimity with which they recommended the former Volumes of the series. They propose to continue the series with the same views, and compiled upon the same principles.

And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased, and multiplied, and became more and more strong; and the land was filled with them.
Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph. And he said to his people, Behold, the people, the children of Israel, are more numerous and mightier than we. Come, let us deal wisely with them : lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when any war shall come upon us, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. Therefore they set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Raamses. But in proportion as they afflicted
