Chase from our minds th' infernal foe,
Make us eternal truths receive,
Immortal honour, endless fame :
HYMN FROM PART OF THE XIXTH PSALM.
Soon as the evening shades prevail,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,
HYMN ON PROVIDENCE. When all thy mercies, O my God!
My rising soul surveys ;
In wonder, love, and praise.
The gratitude declare,
But thou canst read it there.
Thy Providence my life sustain'd,
And all my wants redress'd,
And hung upon the breast.
Thy mercy lent an ear,
To form themselves in prayer.
Unnumber'd comforts to my soul
Thy tender care bestow'd, Before my infant heart conceiv'd
From whence those comforts flow'd.
When in the slippery paths of youth
With heedless steps I ran,
And led me up to man.
Through hidden dangers, toils, and death,
It gently clear'd my way ; And through the pleasing snares of vice,
More to be feard than they.
When worn with sickness, oft hast thou
With health renew'd my face ; And when in sins and sorrows sunk,
Reviy'd my soul with grace.
Thy bounteous hand with worldly bliss
Has made my cup run o'er, And in a kind and faithful friend
Has doubled all my store.
Ten thousand thousand precious gifts
My daily thanks employ;
That tastes those gifts with joy.
Through every period of my life
Thy goodnsss I'll pursue ;
The glorious theme renew.
When nature fails, and day and night
Divide thy works no more,
A joyful song I'll raise ;
ANOTHER HYMN ON THE SAME SUBJECT. How are thy servants bless'd, O Lord !
How sure is their defence!
Their help Omnipotence.
Supported by thy care,
And breath'd in tainted air.
Thy mercy sweeten'd every soil,
Made every region please ;
And smooth’d the Tyrrhene seas.
How with affrighted eyes
In all its horrors rise.
Confusion dwelt on every face,
And fear in every heart;
O'ercame the pilot's art.
Yet then from all my griefs, O Lord !
Thy mercy set me free;
My soul took hold on thee.
For though in dreadful whirls we hung
High on the broken wave,
Nor impotent to save.
Obedient to thy will;
At thy command was still.
Thy goodness I'll adore ;
And humbly hope for more.
Thy sacrifice shall be;
