SELECTION 290. 1. Cry alloud ! spare not!
Lift up thy voice like a trumpet ! 2. And show my people | their transgression,
And the house of Jacob their sins. 3. Yet they seek me daily,
And deslight to know my ways, 4. As a nation that did righteousness,
And forsook not the ordinance of their God: 5. They ask of me the ordinances of justice;
They take delight in approaching to God. 6. Wherefore have we fasted, and thou | seest not?
Have afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge?
[Is. lviii. 3.]
SELECTION 291. 1. Behold! in the day of your | fast ye
find pleasure, And exact all your
labors. 2. Behold! ye fast for | strife and debate,
And to smite with the fist of wickedness. 3. Wilt thou call this a fast,
And an acceptable day to JEHOVAH ? 4. Is not this the fast that I have chosen ?
To | loose the bands of wickedness, 5. To undo the heavy burdens,
And to let the oppressed go free,
And that ye | break every yoke? 6. Then shalt thou call, and ŠE|HOVAH shall answer ;
Thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am.
SELECTION 292. [Is. lviii. 4.] 1. Ye shall not fast as ye | do this day,
To make your voice to be heard on high. 2. Is it such a fast that I have chosen,
A day for a | man to afflict his soul? 3. To bow down his head as a bulrush,
And to spread sackcloth and ashes ? 4. Is it not to deal thy | bread to the hungry, Thouse?
And that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy 5. When thou seest the naked, that thou cover him;
And that thou hide not thy self from thine own flesh? 6. Then shall thy light break forth as the morning,
And thine health shall spring forth speedily: 7. And thy righteousness shall | go before thee; The glory of JEHOVAH | shall be thy rearward.
SELECTION 293. [Is. lviii. 9.] 1. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke,
The putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; 2. And if thou draw out thy | soul to the hungry,
And | satisfy the afflicted soul; 3. Then shall thy light rise in obscurity,
And thy | darkness be as the noon day: 4. And Jehovah shall guide thee continually,
And satisfy thy soul in | drought, and make fat thy bones: 5. And thou shalt be like a | watered garden,
- And like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. 6. And thine sħall build the old waste places :
Thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations: 7. And thou shalt be called, the repairer of the breach,
The restorer of paths to dwell in.
[Is. li. 7.1 1. Hearken unto me, | ye that know righteousness,
The people | in whose heart is my law! 2. Fear ye not the reproach of men,
Neither be ye afraid of their revilings: 3. For the moth shall eat them up like a garment,
And the worm shall eat them like wool : 4. But my righteousness shall be for ever,
And my salvation from generation to generation
[Is. lxiv. 5.]
SELECTION 295. 1. Thou meetest him that resjoiceth and worketh right
Those that remember thee in thy ways: 2. Behold! thou art | wroth, for we have sinned :
In those is continuance, and we shall be saved. 3. But we are all as an unclean thing,
And all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; 4. And we | all do fade as a leaf;
And our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. 5. And there is none that | calleth upon thy name,
That stirreth up himself to take hold of thee : 6. For thou hast s hid thy face from us,
And hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.
- [Is. lxiv. 8.]
SELECTION 296. 1. But now, O JEHOVAH! thou art our Father;
We are the clay, and thou our potter; ?And we | all are the work of thy hand. 2. Be not wroth very / greatly, O JEHOVAH !
Neither remember inliquity for ever :
Behold! see! we beseech thee, we are all thy people. 3. Thy holy | cities are a wilderness,
Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. 4. Our holy | and our beautiful house,
Where our | fathers prais-ed thee, 5. Is I burn-ed up with fire:
And all our | pleasant things are laid waste. 6. Wilt thou refrain thyself for these things, O JEHOVAH?
Wilt thou hold thy peace, and af|flict us very sore ? '
[Is. x.] 1. Woe! unto them that descree unrighteous decrees,
And that write grievousness they have prescribed ; 2. To turn a side the needy from judgment,
And to take away the right from the poor of my people; 3. That | widows may be their prey,
And that | they may rob the fatherless! 4. And what will ye do in the day of visitation,
And in the desolation, which shall come from far ? 5. To whom | will ye flee for help?
And where will ye leave your glory? 6. Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners,
And they shall fall under the slain. 7. For all this his anger | is not turned away,
But his hand is stretched out still.
SELECTION 298. [Is. xlii. 23.] 1. Who among you will give ear to this?
Who will hearken and hear for the time to come ? 2. Who
gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? Did not JEHOVAH, he against whom we have sinned? 3. For they | would not walk in his ways,
Neither were they osbedient unto his law, 4. Therefore he hath poured upon him
The fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: 5. And it hath set him on fire around, yet he knew not :
And it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
[Is. lvii. 15.]
1. For thus saith the | High and Lofty One,
That inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy ; 2. I dwell in the high and holy place,
With him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit ; 3. To revive the | spirit of the humble,
And to revive the heart of the contrite ones. 4. For I will not contend for ever,
Neither will | I be always wroth: 5. For the spirit should fail before me,
And the souls which I have made.
[Is. lix. 9.]
SELECTION 300. 1. Therefore is judgment | far from us,
Neither doth | justice overtake us : 2. We wait for light, but belhold obscurity !
For brightness, but we walk in darkness ! 3. We grope for the wall like the blind,
And we grope as | if we had no eyes: 4. We stumble at noon day as in the night;
We are in desolate /. places as the dead. 5. We roar | all like bears,
And | mourn sore like doves : 6. We look for judgment, but there is none ! For salvation, but it is far off from us!
SELECTION 301. 1. Behold! my servant shall deal prudently,
He shall be exalted and exstolled, and be very high. 2. As many were astonished at thee, "His visage was so marred more than | any man,
And his form | more than the sons of men ; 3. So shall he sprinkle | many nations;
The kings shall | shut their mouths at him: 4. For that which had not been told them | shall they see; And that which they had not heard shall they consider.
SELECTION 302. 1. The Lord JEHOVIH
Hath given me the tongue of the learned,
[Is. lii. 13.)
[Is. 1. 4.]
