deliver you up to the councils, and will scourge you in their synagogues; 18 And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19Ånd when they deliver you up, be not over anxious how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given to you in that hour what ye shall speak. 20For ye are not the speakers, but the Spirit of your Father speaking in you. 21 And a brother shall deliver up a brother to death, and a father a child; and children shall rise up against parents, and shall put them to death. 22And ye shall be hated by all on account of my name: but he who endureth to the end shall be saved. 23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee into another: for verily I say to yon, Ye shall not finish the cities of Israel, until the Son of man come. 24A disciple is not above his teacher, nor the servant above his lord. 25Sufficient for the disciple that he be as his teacher, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beezebul, how much more those of the household ? 26Fear them not therefore for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hidden that shall not be known. 27 What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light: and what ye hear in the ear, preach upon the housetops. 28 And fear not those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in gehenna. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for an assarion? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear ye not then, ye are of more value than many sparrows. 32Everyone therefore who will confess me before men, I also will confess him before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever shall deny me before men, I also will deny him before my Father in heaven, 34 Think not that I came to cast peace on the earth: I came not to cast peace, but a sword. 35 For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter in law against her mother in law. 36 And the enemies of a man are those of his own household. 37 He who loveth father or mother above me is not worthy of me: and he who loveth son or daughter

above me is not worthy of me. 38 And he who taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. 39 He who findeth his life shall lose it: and he who loseth his life for my sake shall find it. 40 He who receiveth you receiveth me, and he who receiveth me receiveth him who sent me. 41He who receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive the reward of a prophet; and he who receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive the reward of a righteous man. 42 And whoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, verily I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.

ND it came to pass, when Jesus had finished appointing his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. 2But John having heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent by means of his disciples, and said to him, Art thou he who should come, or do we look for another? 4 And Jesus answering, said to them, Go and tell to John what things ye hear and see: 5The blind receive sight, and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6And blessed is he whoever shall not be offended in me. 7 And these having departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the desert to see ? Ă reed shaken by the wind? 8But why went ye out? To see a man clothed in soft clothing? behold, they who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. 9But why

went ye out? To see a prophet? yes, I say to you, and above a prophet. 10This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. 11Verily I say to you, Among those born of women there hath not been raised up a greater than John the Baptist: but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven is violated, and the violent seize it. 13For all

the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elijah who was about to come. 15 He who hath ears to hear, let him hear. 16 But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like to children sitting in the market places who calling to their companions, 17Say, We piped to you, and ye did not dance; we mourned, and ye did not lament. 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a demon. 19The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners. But wisdom is justified by her works.

20Then he began to upbraid the cities in which his most powerful works were done, because they repented not: 21Woe to thee, Chorazin! woe to thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22Moreover I say to you, It will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. 23 And thou, Capernaum, hast thou not been exalted to heaven? thou shalt be brought down to Hades for if the mighty works, done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 Moreover I say to you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

25 At that time Jesus answering said, I glorify thee, O father, Lord of the heaven and the earth, seeing that thou didst hide these things from wise and intelligent men, and didst reveal them to babes. 26 Even so, Father for so it seemed good in thy sight. 27 All things have been delivered to me by the Father: and no one knoweth the Son, except the Father; neither knoweth any one the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son may will to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn; for I am meek and humble in heart: and ye shall find rest to your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

At that time Jesus went on the sabbath through the

corn-fields and his disciples being hungry, began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. 2And the Pharisees seeing it, said to him, Behold, thy disciples do what it is not lawful to do on the sabbath. 3But he said to them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was hungry, and they who were with him; 4How he entered into the house of God and did eat the loaves of the offering, which it was not lawful for him to eat, neither for those who were with him, but for the priests alone? 50r have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbaths the priests in the temple break the sabbath, and are blameless? 6But I say to you, That there is here one greater than the temple. 7 And if ye had known what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not condemn the guiltless. 8 For the Son of man is Lord of the sabbath.

9And having passed from thence, he went into their synagogue: 10And, behold, a man having a withered hand. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath? that they might accuse him. 11 And he said to them, What man is there among you, if he shall have one sheep, and it fall into a pit on the sabbath, will he not take hold of it, and lift it out? 12 How much then a man excels a sheep? So then it is lawful to do good on the sabbaths. 13Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored to health. 14And on coming out the Pharisees held a council against him, how they might destroy him. 15 And Jesus knowing it, withdrew from thence and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; 16And strictly charged them that they should not make him known : 17That the word spoken by Isaiah the prophet, might be fulfilled saying, 18 Behold my son, whom I chose; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall declare judgment to the Gentiles. 19 He shall not contend, nor cry out, neither shall any one hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and smoking flax he will

not quench, till he send forth the judgment unto victory. 21 And in his name the Gentiles shall have hope.

22Then was brought to him a demoniac, blind, and dumb and he healed him, so that the dumb spake and saw. 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is this then the son of David? 24 But the Pharisees having heard it, said, This man casteth not out demons but by Beezebul the prince of the demons. 25 And knowing their thoughts, he said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is desolated: and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: 26 And if the Satan casts out the Satan, he is divided against himself; how then shall his kingdom stand? 27 And if 1 by Beezebul cast out the demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come to you. 29Or how can any one enter the house of the strong man and plunder his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he can plunder his house. 30He who is not with me is against me; and he who gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. 31On this account I say to you, All sin and blasphemy will be forgiven to men: but the blasphemy of the Spirit shall not be forgiven. 32And whoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whoever speaketh against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this age nor in that to come. 33 Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or else make the tree bad, and its fruit bad for the tree is known by its fruit. 340ffspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35The good man out of the good treasure bringeth forth good things: and the evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36 But I say to you, That every evil word that men shall speak, they shall render an account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

38Then some of the Scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, Master, we wish to see a sign from thee. 39 But he answered and said to them, An evil and
