take Mary thy wife: for her pregnancy is by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, 23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is, being interpreted, God with us. 24Then Joseph when he arose from sleep did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife: 25 And knew her not until she had brought forth a son: and he called his name JESUS.

OW when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa

Now the days of Herod the king, behold, there

:

came Magians from the east to Jerusalem, 2Saying, Where is he who is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to pay him homage. 3But Herod the king having heard it, was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4And having assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born. 5And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judæa for thus it is written by the prophet, 6And thou Bethlehem, land of Judah, art by no means the least among the leaders of Judah: from thee shall come forth a Leader who shall guide my people Israel. 7 Then Herod, having secretly called the Magians, inquired minutely of them the time of the appearing of the star. 8And sending them to Bethlehem, he said, Go and search diligently for the child; and when ye have found him, bring me word, that I also may come and do him homage. 9And they having heard the king, departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, until coming, it stood over where the young child was. 10 And seeing the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11And having entered the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and falling down they paid homage to him: and having opened their treasures, they presented to him gifts

gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. 12And having been divinely warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed by another way into their own country.

13 And they having departed into their own country, behold an angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there until I tell thee: for Herod is about to seek the child to destroy him. 14 And he having risen, took the child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: 15 And was there until the death of Herod: that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. 16Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked by the Magians, was exceedingly angry, and having sent forth, he slew all the children in Bethlehem, and in all its neighbourhood, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired from the Magians. 17Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, 18In Rama a voice was heard, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. 19But Herod having died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20Saying, Arise, and take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead who sought the life of the child. 21 And he arose, and took the child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus reigned in Judæa instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to depart thither: but being divinely warned in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee : 23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that what was spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, He shall be called a Nazarene.

AND those days of Judæa, 2Saying, Repent ye

ND in those days came John the Baptist, preaching

for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For this is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying,

A voice of one crying aloud in the desert, Prepare ye
the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 4 But
John himself had his raiment of camel's hair, and a
leathern girdle about his loin; and his food was locusts
and wild honey. 5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and
all Judæa, and all the region round about the Jordan,
6 And were baptized in the river Jordan, confessing
their sins. But seeing many of the Pharisees and
Sadducees coming to the Baptism, he said to them,
Offspring of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from
the coming wrath? 8Bring forth, therefore, fruit worthy
of repentance: 9And think not to say among your-
selves, We have Abraham for our father: for
you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children
to Abraham. 10 And already the axe is laid to the root
of the trees: therefore every tree not bearing good
fruit is cut down, and cast into fire. 11For I indeed
baptize you with water to repentance: but he who
cometh after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am
not worthy to carry: he shall baptize you with the Holy
Spirit and fire: 12Whose fan is in his hand, and he will
thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor, and will gather
his wheat into the garner; but the chaff he will burn
with fire unquenchable.

13Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But John opposed him, saying, I have need to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me? 15But Jesus answering said to him, suffer it now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him. 16And Jesus, having been baptized, went up immediately from the water and, lo, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, coming upon him: 17 And lo a voice from the heavens, saying, This is my son, the beloved, in whom I am well pleased.

HEN Jesus was led away by the spirit into the

Tdesert to be tempted by the devil. 2And having

fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he hungered. And the tempter coming, said to him, If

thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves. 4But he answering, said, It is written, Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word proceeding through the mouth of God. 5Then the devil taketh him away into the holy city, and setteth him on the battlement of the temple, 6And saith to him, If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He will give his angels charge concerning thee: and upon their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou strike thy foot against a stone. 7Jesus said to him, Again, it is written, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8Again, the devil taketh him up on an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9And said to him, All these things will I give thee, if falling down thou will do me homage. 10Then saith Jesus to him, Go away, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt do homage to the Lord thy God, and him alone shalt thou worship. 11Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered to him.

12Now having heard that John was delivered up, he departed into Galilee; 13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, near the sea, on the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim: 14That what was spoken by Isaiah, the prophet, might be fulfilled, saying, 15 Land of Zabulon, and land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea on the other side of the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; 16The people sitting in darkness saw a great light; and to those who were sitting in the region and shadow of death, light arose to them.

17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 18 And walking by the lake of Galilee, he saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the lake: for they were fishermen. 19 And he saith to them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. 20 And they immediately leaving the nets followed him. 21 And going from thence, he saw two other brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 And

they immediately, leaving their boat and their father, followed him.

23 And Jesus went about in Galilee, teaching them in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. 24And his fame went into all Syria: and they brought to him all who were afflicted with divers diseases and bound to sufferings; and demoniacs and lunatics, and paralytics; and he healed them. 25 And great multitudes followed him from Galilee and Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judæa, and beyond the Jordan.

V.

AND seeing the multitudes, he went up on the

mount: and having sat down, his disciples came to him: 2And having opened his mouth, he taught them, saying, 3Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their's is the kingdom of heaven. 4Blessed are they who mourn for they shall be comforted. 5Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 6Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. 8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. 9Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God 10Blessed are those who have been persecuted on account of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11Blessed are ye, when they shall reproach and persecute you, and shall say every evil word against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets who were before you. 13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt become insipid, wherewith shall it be seasoned? it is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out, and to be trodden down by men. 14 Ye are the

light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do they light a lamp and place it under the measure, but on the lamp-stand; and it giveth light to all who are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in heaven. 17Think not that I
