The following were the total numbers enumerated at the Population Census as engaged (1) in all branches of Railway Companies' services, (2) in omnibus service, (3) in tramway service, and (4) in shipping service :— 20,939 112,493 248,319 1,117,159 1,365,478 14,356 143,078 157,434 50,506 89,840 140,346 140,725 121,838 262,563 24,838 40,567 350,512 113,918 138,756 7,438 48,005 80,114 430,626 ↑ The following were the total numbers enumerated as in Central and Local Government employment:— Central Government Local Government .. 618,765 115,217 58,296 11,528 677,061 126,745 803,806 614,771 247,975 76,759 36,135 691,530 284,110 975,640 The total numbers of males and females shown as engaged in all industries in Scotland and in Great Britain are larger than the total numbers shown as "gainfully occupied " on page 15 and on pages 3 and 7. This arises from the fact that in the Scottish Census the industry figures include, but the occupation figures exclude, some students and ex-commissioned officers and other ranks of the Naval and Military Services, who in the occupation tabulation were classed among persons without remunerative occupation and also certain persons from whom a statement of industry, but no corresponding statement of occupation, was obtained. NUMBERS AGED 10 YEARS AND UPWARDS IN GREAT BRITAIN, AND PROPORTIONS, ENGAGED IN THE PRINCIPAL INDUSTRY GROUPS AT SUCCESSIVE CENSUSES 1881-1921, AND INTERCENSAL PERCENTAGE CHANGE. NOTE. This table has been constructed to indicate in a very general manner the fluctuations of the numbers engaged in each industry shown. In using the table the figures for the years 1881-1901 must be compared with those in the first column for the year 1911, and those in the second column of the year 1911 must be used for comparison with 1921. Owing to radical changes which have been made in the method of classification only very rough comparisons can be made. The figures for 1881-1911 (first column) exclude maintenance staff, clerks, carmen, and certain other occupations common to all industries. The figures for 1911 (second column) and 1921 include all persons engaged in the industry. The numbers are given to the nearest thousand. The proportions engaged and the intercensal increases and decreases have been calculated on the actual numbers.
