The Pharisee and the Publican.

S it right to think ourselves
Better far than others?

We may know our own faults, but

We cannot judge our brothers'.

Jesus spoke a parable

To the self-conceited,

And-for He was Lord of all

Righteous judgment meted.

Two men once went up to pray
In God's temple holy ;
One, a Pharisee, was proud:
The Publican was lowly.

One stood, lofty, thanking God
That his life was blameless;

Never, like that Publican,

Given to courses shameless.

But the Publican, afar,

Smote his breast whilst praying ;

God be merciful to me

A sinner, was his saying.

Which, said Jesus, justified

Went, God's pardon keepingHe who stood so full of pride,

Or he that knelt there weeping?

CHAPTER XLIII.

The Good Shepherd. Lazarus. The Publican. Zacchæus. Christ's Entry into Jerusalem.

ESUS said, I am the Good Shepherd; the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. I am

the Good Shepherd, and know My sheep, and am known of Mine. As the Father knoweth Me, even so know I the Father, and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) Therefore his sisters sent unto Jesus, saying, Lord, behold, he whom Thou lovest is sick. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. And He said to His disciples, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth, but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Then said His disciples, Lord, if he sleep Then said Jesus unto them plainly,

he shall do well. Lazarus is dead.

And I am glad for your sake that

I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; never

theless let us go unto him. Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary sat still in the house. Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother had not died; but even now, whatsoever Thou wilt ask of God, God will give it Thee. Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto Him, I

know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus saith unto her, I am the Resurrection and the Life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. Believest thou this? I believe that Thou

She saith unto Him, Yea, Lord; art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come and calleth for thee. As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto Him. Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying unto Him, Lord, if Thou hadst been here my brother had not died. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, He groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, and said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto Him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept. Then said the Jews, Behold how He loved him! and some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man

should not have died? Jesus therefore, again groaning in Himself, cometh to the grave: it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up

His eyes and said, Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard Me. And I knew that Thou hearest Me always, but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that Thou hast sent Me. And when He had thus spoken He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothing; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and leth im go. Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on Him. But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. If we let Him thus alone, all men will believe on Him, and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put Him to death.

And it came to pass, as Jesus went towards Jerusalem, that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

And He spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others. Two men went up into the Temple

to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank Thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Then Jesus took unto Him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. For He shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: and they shall scourge Him, and put Him to death, and the third day He shall rise again. And they understood none of these things. And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. And behold there was a man named Zacchæus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who He was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him; for He was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchæus, make haste, and come down, for to-day I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and
