This edition of "VANDEGRIFT'S UNITED STATES TARIFF, 1897,” revised to July 1, 1902, is distributed for the use and convenience of officers of the customs.

The compilation of the law of 1897, and decisions thereunder, and the schedule of duties therein, revised to July 1, 1902, while believed to be generally correct, are not declared by authority of the Department, but may be consulted with advantage in the consideration of tariff matters.

Again we present an edition of Tariff Schedules, this time un

der the Act of 1897, and we have endeavored to give the most complete list of commercial articles by trade names ever published, and, while no pains have been spared to secure accuracy in the table of rates, errors of judgment may have occurred and ions which may be reached by the Customs Authorities.

As our schedules

are largely based

upon decisions of the

Courts, the General Appraisers and the Treasury Department, we cannot believe that any material changes will occur.

We refer each article to the paragraph of the law under

which we have classified it for duty, so that those who wish may

draw their own conclusions.

We also give a full list of articles on which rates of drawback

have been fixed by the Secretary of the Treasury as provided by

law.

We believe this work (while very compact) the most reliable authority on the matters contained therein ever presented to the

public.
