CHAP. XII.

1 An exhortation to conftant faith, patience and godliness. 22 Acommendation of the new teftament above the old. WHEREFORE feeing we also are compassed about with fo great a cloud of witneffes, let us lay afide every weight, and the fin which doth to easily befet us, and let us run with patience the race that is fet before us,

2 Looking unto Jefus the author and finither of our faith; who for the joy that was fet before him, endured the cross, defpifing the fhame, and is fet down at the right hand of the throne of God.

28 Through faith he kept the paffover, and the sprinkling of blood, left he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. 29 By faiththey paffed through the Red fea as by dry land: which the Egyptians affaving to do were drowned.

50 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compalled about feven days

S1 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when the had received the fpies with peace.

32 And, What shall I more fay ? For the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samfon, and of Jephthae; of David alfo, and Samuel, and of the prophets :

33 Who through faith fubdued king doms, wrought righteoufnels, obtained promifes, topped the mouths of lions,

34Quenched the violence of fire, efcaped the edge of the fword, out of weaknefs were made ftrong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 35 Women received their dead raifed to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better refurrection :

36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and courgings, yea, moreover, of bonds and imprisonment:

Ye have not yet refifted unto blood, ftriving againft fin.

5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which fpeaketh unto you as unto children, My fon, defpife not thou the chaltening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

6 For whom the Lord loveth he chafteneth, and courgeth every fon whom he receiveth.

7 If ye endure chaftening, God dealeth with you as with fons: for, What fon is he whom the father chafteneth not?

8 But if ye be without chaftisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not fons.

9 Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: Shall we not much rather be in fubjection unto the Father of fpirits, and live?

10 For they verily for a few days chaftened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

11 Now no chaftening for the present feemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless, afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteoufnefs, unto them which are exercised thereby.

12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees:

THE GENERAL EPISTLE OF JAMES.

CHAP. I.

1 We must ask wisdom of God, 19 bear the word, and do thereafter. 26 What true religion is.

JAMES, a fervant of God and of the Lord Jefus Chrift, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting

2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations,

3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

But let patience have ber perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

5 If any of you lack wifdom, let him afk of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

6 But let him afk in faith, nothing wayering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the fea driven with the wind and toffed. 7 For let not that man think that he fhall receive any thing of the Lord.

8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice In that he is exalted:

10 But the rich, in that he is made low because as the flower of the grafs he hall pass away.

19¶Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be fwift to hear, flow to fpeak, flow to wrath:

20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteoufneis of God.

21 Wherefore lay apart all filthinefs and fuperfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meeknefs the engrafted word which is able to fave your fouls.

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own felves.

23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glafs :

24 For he beholdeth himfelf, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was

25 But whofo looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, hebeing not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be bleffed in his deed.

26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To vifit the fa therlefs and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unfpotted from the world. CHAP. II.

without works, 17 is dead. MY brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jefus Chrift, the Lord of glory, with refpect of perlons.

11 For the fun is no fooner rifen with 1 We must not despise the poor. 14 Faith a burning heat, but it withereth the grafs, and the lower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it peritheth; fo alfo hall the rich man fade away in his ways. 12 Bleffed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he is tried, he fhall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promifed to them that love him.

13 Let no man fay when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man ;

14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own luft, and enticed. 15 Then when luft hath conceived, it bringeth forth fin; and in, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variablenefs, neither hadow of turning. 18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we fhould be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

2 For if there come unto your affembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly appar el, and there come in alfo a poor man in vile raiment :

3 And ye have refpect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and fay unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and fay to the poor, Stand thou there, or fit here under my footitool:

4 Are ye not then partial in yourfelves, and are become judges-of evil thoughts?

5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chofen the poor of this world, rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promifed to them that love him

6 But ye have defpifed the poor. Do not rich men opprefs you, and draw you before the judgment feats?

7 Do not they blafpheine that worthy name by the which ye are called?

954 Of faith and works.

JAMES.

Of bridling the tongue.

8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to jany man offend not in word, the fame ir the fcripture, Thou shalt love thy neigh-a perfect man, and able also to bridle the bour as thy felf, ye do well: whole body.

9 But if ye have refpect to perfons, ye 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses commit fin, and are convinced of the lawmouths, that they may obey us; and we as tranfgreffors. turn about their whole body.

10 For whofoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Behold alfo the thips, which though they be fo great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very fnrall heim, whitherfoever the gov.

11 For he that faid, Do not commit adultery, faid alfo, Do not kill. Now iffernor lifteth. thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a tranfgreffor of the law. 12 So fpeak ye, and fo do, as they that fhall be judged by the law of liberty.

13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath fhewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

14 ¶ What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man fay he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith fave him?

15 If a brother or fister be naked, and deftitute of daily food,

54 Even fo the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: fo is the tongue among our meinbers, that it defileth the whole body, and fetteth on fire the courfe of nature; and is fet on fire of hell.

7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of ferpents, and of things in the fea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind; 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it an unruly evil, full of deadly poiton. 9 Therewith blefs we God, even the Father; and therewith curle we men, which are made after the fimilitude of God.

16 And one of you fay unto them, De-is part in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithitanding ye give them not thofe things, which are needful to the body; What dorb it profit ?

17 Even fo faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

18 Yea, a man may fay, Thou haft faith, and I have works: fhew me thy faith without thy works, and I will thew thee my faith by my works.

19 Thou believeft that there is one God: thou doeft well: the devils alfo believe and tremble.

20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

21 Was not Abraham our Father juf tified by works, when he had offered Ifaac his fon upon the altar?

24 Seeft thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

23 And the fcripture was fulfilled which faith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteoufnefs: and he was called the friend of God. 24 Ye fee then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

25 Likewife alfo, was not Rahab the harlot juftified by works, when the had received the meffengers, and had fent bem out another way?

26 For as the body without the fpirit is dead, fo faith without works is dead also. CHAP. III.

10 Out of the fame mouth proceedeth blefling and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not fo to be.

11 Doth a fountain fend forth at the fame place fweet water and bitter?

12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? Either a vine, figs? So can no fountain both yield falt water and fresh.

13 Who is a wife man and endued with knowledge among you? Let him hew out of a good converfation his works with meeknefs of wildom.

14 But if ye have bitter envying and ftrife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

15 This wisdom defcendeth not from above, but is earthly, fenfual, devili. 16 For where envying and firife is, there is confufion and every evil work.

17 But the wildom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and Jeafy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrify.

18 And the fruit of righteoufnefs is fown in peace of them that make peace, CHAP. IV.

1 Against coverousness, & intemperance, 5 pride, 1 detraction, and rasb judgment. FROM whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence, even of your lufts that war in your members?

CHAP. V.

1 Wicked rich men are warned of God's impending judgments. 7 The brethren are exhorted to patience after the example of the prophets and of Job: 12 to abstain from fwearing; 13 10 pray in affliction and fickness, and fing pfaims in profperity.

GO to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miferies that hall come upon you.

2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.

8 Your gold and filver is cankered; and the ruft of them fhall be a witnefs against you, and fhall eat your flefh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the laft days.

Behold the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields,

13 Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is any merry? Let him fing pfalms.

14 Isany fick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

15 And the prayer of faith fhall fave the fick, and the Lord fhall raise him up; and if he have committed fins, they thall be forgiven him.

16 Confefs your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

17 Elias was a man fubject to like paffions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain : and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and fix months.

18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him,

20 Let him know, that he which converteth the finner from the error of his way fhall fave a foul from death, and hall hide a multitude of fins.
