HIS family, originally named Harpwaye, have matched with the ancient houfes of Croft, Wigmor, Monington, Bodenham, Bafkerfield, Whitney, Talbott, Harley, Delabere, Pennbridge, Baldwyn, Scydmore, Lyngin, Langley, and Kemeys.

Jevan ap Harpwaye, of Trefimont in Herefordshire, changed his name to Thomas, by marriage with Catherine, daughter and fole heir to Thomas ap Thomas, of Wenvoe-castle, which his defcendants have ever fince continued.

Edmond Thomas, his fon, by his fecond wife, Frances, daughter to George Catchmay, of Brixwere, had iffue two fons;

First, William, who married a daughter of Sir John Stradling, of St. Donat's-caftle, Bart. whole heir-general conveyed the eftates of Wenvoe-castle, and Ruperra, by marriage, to general Ludlow.

James Thomas, Efq; fecond fon, had iffue, William, who, by the daughter and fole heir of William Hopkins, of Courty-Bettiws, had iffue, William Thomas, Efq; who took to wife, Sarah, daughter and heir of John Powell, of Flemingfton, and had iffue, John, Edmond, and William.

John Thomas, Efq; eldest fon and heir, was advanced to the dignity of a baronet, the fixth of King William and Queen Mary, with a remainder in his patent, to his brothers, Edmond, and William.

Sir John Thomas, Bart. married Elizabeth, relict of general Ludlow, who was daughter to William Thomas, Efq; (by his wife, Jane, daughter to Sir John Stradling, Bart.) by which marriage, the eftates before-mentioned, returned into the fa

mily; he died Jan. 17, 1702-3, without iffue; whereupon, the dignity and eftate devolved upon his next brother,

Sir Edmond Thomas, Bart. who married Mary, daughter of John How, Efq; paymafter of the forces, privy-councellor, vice-chamberlain, and knight of the fhire for Gloucester, temp. King William, Queen Mary, and Queen Anne. He died, 1723, leaving two fons, Sir Edmond, his fucceffor in dignity and eftate; and John, now a colonel in the guards, who married lady Sophia Keppel, daughter of the right honourable Arnold Jooft Van Keppel, the first earl of Albemarle of that family, by whom he has iffue,

Sir Edmond Thomas, Bart. the eldest son and heir, who married, May, 1740, Abigail, daughter of Sir Thomas Webster, of Battle-abbey in Suffex, Bart. and relict of William Northey, of Compton-Baffet in Wiltshire, Efq; fon and heir of the late Sir Edward Northey, Knt. attorney-general. By this lady he had three fons; 1. Sir Edmund, his fucceffor; 2. Frederick, an enfign in the foot-guards; 3. John, all minors. Sir Edmund died in 1767, and was fucceeded by,

Sir Edmund Thomas, his eldeft fon, who is the prefent baronet, and unmarried.

HIS family is defcended from Thomas Wheate, of Walfal in Staffordshire, Efq; who had iffue, William Wheate, of Coventry in Warwickihire, who took to wife, Anne, daughter of Adrian Quiney, of Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, (relict of Richard Bailey, of Litchfield) by whom he had, William Wheate, of Glympton in Oxfordshire, living 1634, who married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Thomas Stone, of London, by whom he had two fons, Thomas, and William, who died an infant; and two daughters, Anne, mar

ried to Charles Thorold, of Harmfton in Lincolnshire, Efq; and of London, merchant, who fined for alderman; and Elizabeth, who died an infant.

Thomas Wheate, Efq; only furviving fon and heir, married Frances, daughter of Sir Robert Jenkinfon, of Walcot in Oxfordshire, Knt. and had iffue only one fon,

Thomas Wheate, Efq; the firft baronet of this family, fo created 8 Will. III. He married Anne, daughter and coheir of George Sawbridge, of London, bookfeller, who fined for alderman, by whom he had three fons; William, who died young; Sir Thomas, his fucceffor; and Sir George Wheate, who fucceeded his brother, Sir Thomas, barrifter at law, and recorder of Banbury; alfo two daughters, Frances, married to Sir Francis Page, Knt. one of the juftices of the court of King's-bench, (fhe died Nov. 1730) and Anne. Sir Thomas represented the borough of Woodstock in Oxfordshire, in the three laft parliaments of Queen Anne, and the first of King George I. and died keeper of the ftores of the ordnance, Aug. 25, 1721.

Sir Thomas Wheate, Bart. his eldest fon and fucceffor in dignity and eftate, reprefented the borough of Woodstock, in the second parliament of King George I. and married a daughter and coheir of Thomas Gould, of Iver in Buckinghamshire, Efq; but dying in May, 1746, and leaving no male issue, the title defcended to his brother,

Sir George Wheate, Bart. who married Avice, daughter of Sir Jacob Acworth, Knt. furveyor of his Majefty's navy, by whom he had iffue two fons and three daughters; Sir George, the late, and Sir Jacob, the prefent baronet; Efther, Henrietta, Avice, and John-Thomas. Sir George died June 5, 1751, and was fucceeded by his eldest son,

Sir George Wheate, Bart. who died in Jan. 1760, without iffue, and was fucceeded by his brother,

Sir Jacob Wheate, the prefent baronet, who is a lieutenant in the royal navy, and unmarried.

HIS is a branch of the family of Manfell, of Muddlef

Tcombe, (as that is of the lord Manfell's) the genealogy

whereof is already treated of, in the first volume of this work, No. 50, where it is obferved, that Sir Francis Manfell, of Muddlescombe, created baronet 19 Jac. I. (fecond fon of Sir Edward Manfell, of Margam in Glamorganfhire, Knt.) by his firft wife, Catherine, daughter and heir of Henry Morgan, of Muddlefcombe, Efq; had four fons; 1. Walter, who died S. P. 2. Anthony, whofe fon, Sir Edward, fucceeded to the Muddlefcombe title; 3. Francis, who was principal of Jefus college, Oxford; and, 4. Richard, who was ancestor of the Ifchoed line, already treated of in vol. I. And by his fecond wife, Dorothy, daughter of Alban Stepney, of Prendergast in Pembrokeshire, Efq; the faid Sir Francis had iffue three fons; 1. John; 2. Edward, a captain, (who left a fon, Rawleigh, who married Frances, the widow of Henry, hereafter mentioned, and by her had a fon, Rawleigh) and, 3. Rawleigh; and two daughters; Catherine, married to Sir John Stepney, of Prendergast in Pembrokeshire, Bart. and Cicely, to George Jones, of Abercothy in Carmarthenshire, Efq.

John Manfell, Efq; the eldeft fon and heir, by the fecond venter, had in marriage, Mary, eldest daughter of Sir Henry Vaughan, of Derwidd, Knt. (who was the widow of Charles Philips, of Lewes-lodge in Carmarthenshire, Efq; at nine years of age; fo that fhe was maid, wife, and widow, the day her husband died) and had iffue four children; John, who died S. P. Henry, Bridget, and Sage; Henry, eldeft furviving fon and heir, married Frances, fole daughter and heir of Sir John Stepney, of Prendergast, Bart. (and dame Magdalen, his wife, daughter of Sir Henry Jones, of Abermarles in Carmarthenfhire, Knt.) by whom he was father of his only fon, Edward, who took to wife, Dorothy, daughter of Philip, and fifter and heir to Edward Vaughan, of Trimfaran, Efq; (who at his death, 1683, unmarried, bequeathed her his whole eftate) by whom he had eleven children; viz. Sir Edward, James, Henry, Philip, Rawleigh, John, Johanna, Dorothy, Magdalen, Mary, and Frances. The faid Edward was created a baronet, 7 Will. III. he was pricked high-sheriff for the county of Carmarthen,

by King James, and was alfo pricked again by King William. Sir Edward Manfell, Bart. died anno 1719, being fucceeded in title and eftate by his eldest fon,

Sir Edward Manfell, who married twice; firft, Anne, daughter of Thomas Price, of Gorth-Lloyn, in the county of Carmarthen, Efq; by whom he had no iffue; fhe died at Hampftead in Middlefex, Nov. 1, 1731., Sir Edward married, fecondly, Nov. 1740, Mrs. Bayley, of the Vineyard, near Hereford. Sir Edward dying in 1754, was fucceeded by,

Sir Edward-Vaughan Price, the present baronet.

Created BARONET, April 1, 1697.

HIS family is defcended from Richard Buckworth, of Wifbich, in the Ifle of Ely, who married Rofe, daughter and coheir of Skegnes, of Skegnes in Lincolnshire, £fqs and had iffue, Everard Buckworth, of Wifbich, Efq; living 1619, who married Emme, daughter of Thomas Oxburgh, of Lenne in Norfolk, and died 1641, aged feventy, having iffue by her, Everard Buckworth, of Wifbich, Efq; and other chil dren.

Sir John Buckworth, Knt. and alderman of London, was a younger brother of Everard, before-mentioned; he married by and had only one fon, Sir John, and three daughters; Marga ret, married to Sir Peter Vandeput, Knt. fheriff of London, 1684; Elizabeth, to Thomas Hartopp, Efq; alderman of London; and Mary, the wife of Sir William Hufley, Knt. who went ambaffador from King William, to the Ottoman Porte. Sir John died Dec. 1687, and Dr. Scott, who knew him well, gives the following amiable, affecting, and extraordinary cha racter of him. This excellent perfon, Sir John Buckworth,
