E.6.-POST OFFICE (LONDON) RAILWAY.

The Post Office (London) Railway Act, 1913, (3 & 4 Geo.
V. c. 116) provided for the construction and equipment
of this railway, and for the borrowing by the Treasury
of the money required, up to a maximum of £1,100,000,
repayable by means of annuities for a term not exceeding
30 years chargeable to Post Office Votes. Owing to the
rise in the cost of labour and materials since the Act was
passed, the total cost of construction and equipment of
the railway is now estimated at £1,650,000, of which
£1,091,039 has been expended out of loans and £46,480
out of moneys provided on the Post Office Votes for the
years 1921-2 and 1922-3.

It is proposed to proceed forthwith with the completion of
the work as a scheme for the relief of unemployment
and to continue to meet expenditure from Votes. The
present Estimate provides for the anticipated expenditure
to 31st March, 1924 ...

A.-SALARIES, WAGES AND ALLOWANCES-
Provision was made in the original Estimate for salary of
the Lord Privy Seal at the rate of 2,000l. per annum.
This further sum is required to provide for a salary of
5,000l. per annum as from 23rd January, 1924, to the
present Lord Privy Seal who is also Deputy Leader of
the House
