MALAGA, Spain. Lat. 36° 43′ N; long. 4° 26' W. Pop. 150,000. Tr.-I. Coal, coke, patent fuel, fire, bricks, fire-clay, cotton raw and manufactured, linen, woollen, and other textile fabrics, yarns, iron, hardware, glass, china, and earthenware, salt, petroleum, fish, dye stuffs, colonial produce, butter, cheese, timber, naval stores, &c.; E. Wine, raisins, grapes, almonds, figs, lemons, oranges, olive oil, brandy, anchovies, aniseed, canary seed, barilla, grass, lead, and minerals, &c. Accn. Between the two breakwaters there is a depth of about 30 to 32ft, and at the entrance to the inner port about 23ft. Pilotage. From line uniting Piave and Maistra, 30f each vessel and 3c per ton; maritime channel, 25f each vessel and 4c per ton. Towage. MALMO, Sweden. Lat. 55° 37' N ; long. 13° E. Pop. 60,000. Tr.-I. Coal, colonial produce, manufactures, cotton, chemicals, iron, herrings, salted fish, manures, &c.; E. Grain, timber, cattle, flour, butter, cheese, wood-pulp, pasteboard, eg,s. Accn. Inner harb. formed by moles. The bar and harb. have 22ft of water, vessels of 21ft dft. can lie alongside the moles. The new harbour is 2,362ft by 492st, and 74m deep; it has two electric cranes. There is a graving dock 230ft long, and a patent slip 400ft long, for vessels up to 1,700 tons, in the port. Cranes up to 40 tons. Three of Brown's hoisting and conveying machines for discharging coals. Charges. Light dues, about 34d for all classes of vessels; harb. dues 1d ditto; load money 1d ditto. Pilotage. C. from foreign ports: 3/3 per reg. ton summer, 3/9 winter. Towage. From the harb. to the last buoy in the roads, and vice versa, as per agreement. MALTA (VALETTA). Lat. 35° 54' N ; long. 14° 31′ E. Pop. with Gozo, 197,070. Tr.-I. Cattle, flour, cotton, coals, woollens, coffee, clothing, sugar, linens, dried fish, iron, beer and ale, indigo, butter, earthenware, olive oil, ivory, silk, grain, braids, potato seed, wine, spirits, fresh and dried fruits, &c.; E. Olive oil, ivory, cotton, silk, cummin seed, grain, oranges, potatoes, canvas; onions, and stones. Accn. Safe and commodious harb., with suffi cient water for largest vessels afloat. Ships of any size can lie close to quays. Four dry docks belonging to the Admiralty. Charges. Tonnage dues 3d ton. Steamers are exempt from tonnage dues, but pay port dues, whether cargo is discharged or not, I each, up to 400 reg. tons, 2 up to 800 tons, and £3 above that tonnage. Vessels that do not take a pilot but require the services of a boat for securing hawsers, or other work connected with mooring the vessel

Rice, coffee, machine-made tiles, hides, tumeric, spices, &c. Accn. Open roadstead in 4 to 5 fms. Vessels loaded and discharged by lighters and canoes. Charges. Port ducs 2 annas per ton. MANILA, Luzon, Philippine Islands. Lat. 14° 36' N ; long. 120° 54' E. Pop. About 220,000. Tr.-I. Cotton fabrics, silks, woollens, drugs, clocks, jewellery; E. Sugar, hemp, copra, cordage, tobacco, cigars, indigo, cotton, coffee, rice, leather, dye woods, rum, wood, mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, &c. Accn. Vessels drawing not more than 12ft can load and discharge alongside the quay. There is a patent slip 820ft by 36ft by 26ft. New harbour works are being constructed at Manila, which will allow vessels of the largest onnage to lie alongside. Charges. Port and light dues 4d ton. Pilotage. $10. Officials. MANTYLUOTO, Finland. Lat. 61° 36′ N; long. 21° 24′ E. Tr.-I. Coals and general. The new harb., two cables SE. of Räfsö anchorage, has a stone quay, 984 feet in length and 144 feet in breadth. Accn. On the quay there is a large warehouse, which can be used both summer and winter, and alsɔ a crine to 35 tons. The quay is long enough to allow 3 large steamers to di charge at one time. and the depth of water in the channel to the quay and alongside is 18 to 22ft. Gool leading lights are placed on the Mäntyluoto land and on the end of the pier, but all vessels entering there must have a pilot, which can be had from Kallo. The harb. is a safe and good dis charging and loading place for steamers, and is free of ice up to January. Vess: Is taking general cargo can always get wood cargo out again. About 75,000 standards wood goods shipped yearly. The distance from Mäntyluoto to the town Björneborg is 20 kms and three trains leave the harbour daily for the town, taking only 45 minutes. The railway wagons and trains go right to the end of the pier, at which cargoes can be discharged to facilitate the despatch of steamers. At Mäntyluoto there are harbour officials and telegraph office. Charges. Harbour dues at Mäntyluoto the same as at Räfsö. Brokers & Coal Merchants. Oscar Heine & Co.

MANZANILLA DE CUBA, W.I. Lat. 20° 20' N ; long. 77° 12' W. Pop. 14,000. Tr.

I. Machinery: agricultural and for sugar plantations, general merchandise; E. Sugar (in bags), cedar, mahogany, tobacco.

Accn. Shore of bay is low, and the water is shallow; HT. 9ft. Vessels of 9 to 1oft dft can lie alongside the wharves; those above that dft load about half a mile off shore. Ligh erage is necessary. No docks or quays. Charges. Steamer entering port $8 50c; sailing vessel entering port $4 25c; cargo landed from steamer 25c per ton; from sailing vessel 125c per ton; coal landed from steamer 125c per ton; from sailing ves el roc per ton. Tonnage dues shall be levied at all ports or places in Cuba which may be in possession or under administrative control of the land or naval forces of the United States until further orders. (a) Entry of a vessel from a port or place not in Cuba 20c; (b) entry of a vessel from another port or place in Cuba, engaged at the time of entry in the coasting irade of Cuba; (c) the rate of tax on a vessel which enters or clears in ballast shall be one-half of the rate imposed by subdivision (a) or (3). Head stevedore $2 50c per day, and every assistant $1 50c as well as food, or pay 50c per day more. Official. Captain of the Port, who is also Collector of Customs.

MARACAIBO, Venezuela. Lat. 10° 38' N ; long. 71° 42′ W. Pop. 20,000. Tr.-E. Coffee, &c. Accn. The harb. is deep enough to contain the largest vessels; but, owing to the bar closing the Gulf of Venezuela, only vessels of a limited dft. can go there. There is a depth of water on the bar from 12 to 14ft, but no vessel should draw more than 12ft. Inside the harb. there are 5 to 7 fms of water close to the town. Charges. Tonnage dues with cargo 2/1 in or out. Light dues 3d ton. Clearance 10 8s 4d in and out. Doctor's visit 12/6. Bill of health 12/6. Pilotage. On a vessel of 230 tons reg., with general cargo in and cargo out of divi-divi and fustic, inwards, £6 10s; to the coast I 138 4d. Towage. In, 6 ton reg.; out, 4/2 ton reg., including pilot. MARBELLA, Spain. Lat. 36° 33′ N; long. 4° 52′ W. About 38 miles NE. of Gibraltar. It is a very healthy city, and its climate fine and mild. Tr.-I. Coals, firebricks, timber, and mill grinding stones; E. Magnetic iron ore, fruits, oranges, grapes, rais ns, wine, lemons, cork, and esparto grass. Accn. An iron pier belonging to the Marbel'a Iron Ore Company, Ltd., about 900't long in 18 to 20ft. Good anchorage ab ut half a mile off the shore, in 14fms, sandy bottom. Charges. Tonnage dues, from Europe, Ipta. 25c.; from other countries, 2pta. 50c. Coals 25c per ton. Tonnage dues, to Europe, Ipta.; other countries 2pta. Iron ore to Europe 25c.; other countries 50c. MARANHAM, Brazil. Lat. 2° 31′ S: long. 44° 18′ W. Pop. 31,000. Tr.-I. Cotton stuffs, linens, woollens, silks, flour, wines, coal, iron, &c. ; E. Cotton, sugar, hides, balsam, gum. cotton seed, rubber, deer and goat skins, &c. Accn. The harb. has accommodation for steamers drawing up to 22 and 23 ft; only lighters can lie at quays; one berth only for 22ft boats. Small cranes, Vessels enter at from half to three-quarter, or, rather, from three-quarter to half ebb; 10 to 12ft LWAST. at E. Gridiron for boats to 500 tons. Charges. MARIUPOL, Russia. Lat. 47° 6' N; long. 37° 35′ E. Pop. about 45,000. Accn. The harbour of Mariupol lies about 2 miles S.W. of the town. During the last year it has been enlarge 1 ad is used by seago ng ships discharging and loading here. D. 16ft, same in entrance channel, which is about 4,000 metres long. MARSALA, Italy. Lat. 37° 47′ N; long. 12° 25' E. Pop. About 50,000. Tr.-I. Chiefly procured from Palermo, principal imports direct, staves, hoop-iron, and coals; E. Wines, fruit. Accn. A large and spacious harb. Depth of water varies from 12 to 15ft. Charges. On vessel of 142 tons, for 14 days £13 5s 7d. Pilotage. On a vessel of 142 reg. tons, ballast in and cargo out :--Pilotage in and mooring, or out and unmooring, LI IIS 9d. Official. British Vice-Consul, Chas. F. Gray.

MARSEILLES, France. Lat. 43° 17′ 49′′ N; long. 5° 22' E. Pop. 500,000. Tr.-I. Wine, spirits, liqueurs, cattle, sheep, coal, grain, cotton oil, palm oil, petroleum, oil seeds and nuts, coffee, raw cotton, hides, maize, rice, raw sugar, rock sulphur, wool; E. Wine, spirits, liqueurs, tiles, bricks, flour, semolinas, hides, lead, crushed ochre, olive oil, oil cake, bran, potatoes, soap, refined sugar, cotton tissues, and dried vege ́ables. Accn. Seven docks, including a new one. The approximate depth of water in the various docks for discharging cargo is: Old port 19ft 8in to 24ft 8in; Joliette 15ft 6in to 39ft 5in; Lazaret and Arenc 23ft to 49ft; Gare Maritime 19ft 6in to 65ft 6in; Bassin National 29ft 6in to 65ft 6in. Bassin de la Pinède, 28ft to 72ft, part of which is being enclo ed. Also six dry docks. Crane to lift up to 120 tons, but water alongside only 18ft deep and many of varying capacity.
