ADVERTISEMENT TO THIS EDITION.

THE asterisks (*), which will be frequently met with in the following pages, are used to denote the additions of the Editor to the Fifth Edition of this Treatise, published in 1827. They will be found at the commencement and at the end of the additional matter, and when it consists of one or more pages, at the beginning of the first and last lines of every page.

The Statutes now in force relating to Merchant Ships and Seamen, are printed in the Appendix. The more important enactments of them have been incorporated with the text of the Treatise, in the place of provisions relating to the same subjects, of Statutes which have been repealed.

The Appendix also contains the forms sanctioned by the Board of Trade, under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1854, in most frequent use, and other forms of practical utility.
