"Among the mercantile publications just issued is Beedell's 'British Tariff" for 1851-52, a work of authority on everything pertaining to the regulations of the revenue as connected with the business of the Custom House. The whole of the book relating to the waterside practice has been re-written, so that with the various other alterations the present volume is a considerable improvement upon those issued in former years.- -Times, Sept. 10 1851. "The twenty-eighth edition of this indispensable mercantile hand-book has just been issued. Mr. Beedell has been intent on keeping up the established high character of his book by making every alteration required from legal changes, by incorporating new and most useful information, and by a careful revision of the whole of the contents."-Morning Chronicle, Oct. 18, 1850. "Mr. Edwin Beedell, of the Custom-house, has rendered an essential service to the mercantile community and the public in general, by the New Edition of his BRITISH TARIFF.' The possession of such a work as this, useful to all classes as it must be, would not be less useful to members of the legislature. It would be the saving to them of much time and trouble, for herein they would find, in a convenient form, a body of Customs' law and practice for immediate reference, which otherwise could be obtained only by the consultation of Parliamentary Records, Acts of Parliament, &c."-Daily News, Oct. 5, 1848. "This most useful work contains ample information respecting Customs' regulations and practice, and which, for so long a period, has rendered it an indispensable adjunct of every counting house collection. Not to people of business alone is the book acceptable, but to the community in general it is valuable, as a means of affording minute instruction on an important branch of our fiscal system. "This annual publication of Mr. Beedell's can with confidence be recommended as a valuable reference and guide to all persons engaged in commercial and fiscal proceedings. Embracing as this work does, so large a mass of useful information, we are not surprised to find that amongst the two thousand subscribers to this edition there appear the heads of our public departments at home and abroad, as well as most of our principal merchants and officials at every port in the United Kingdom."- Observer, Oct., 20, 1851. "This edition of the British Tariff' incorporates all the changes recently made in our commercial legislation. They include the Amended Customs' Act, the new regulations for facilitating public business, the new Passengers' Act, and the Amended Navigation Act. Mr. Beedell seems to have omitted nothing that can make his publication useful to his subscribers and all the commercial world.-Economist, Nov. 3, 1849. "The object of this book is to give information to all connected with the export and import trade of the empire as to the duties they will have to pay, the forms they will have to observe, and the provisions of the several Acts of Parliament they are bound to obey. There is also every knowledge requisite for those who are unacquainted with the particulars necessary to be observed in the transport of either person or property between this country and any other part of the world. The author, from his position, has the best possible opportunity of becoming acquainted with everything necessary to be known, and he appears to have used not only all requisite diligence in the collection of his materials, but to have put them together in a clear and business-like manner."-Shipping Gazette, Sept., 9, 1847. |
