Some of the Chants are divided into parts: in some cases this is done for brevity's sake; but in others, (as in Nos 33, 34,) to allow of their being song in the Hebrew mapper, by alternate cboirs, both joinivg in the concluding Doxology.--Nos. 62 and 88 should be sung to a cbapt wbich admits of change from Miuor to Major.—The responsive Services are intended principally for the use of Suuday Schools; wbere tbe Chant will be found a valuable means of interesting tbe young in the poetical parts of tbe Sacred Scriptures.---The Second Doxology was the one ordinarily suug in the early Christian Churches.-Tbe Hymns at tbe close of the Volume are inserted for tbe benefit of those congregations wbich employ the “Hymus for the Christian Churcb and Home.” The Common Version bas been principally employed, for association's sake. When a departure has been nade, the Editor bas principally consulted tbe translations of Wellbeloved in the Psalms, Job and Proverbs; and of Lowth in Isaiah. Omissions have been freely made, for the sake of brevity, or becanse of an apparent want of barmony between the sentiments of the writer, and the spirit of the Gospel dispensation. The Editor bopes that this little Volume may be the means of giving an increased interest to the writings of holy men of old : and thus tend 10 ibe glory of that God, who, having spoken in tines past through the Prophets, has now declared his will to us more perfectly in tbe Gospel of his Son.
